You can say he is arguably the most valuable player on paper alone !!! but saying he is a franchise player while he has not even outscored 2nd year player Jalen Green in his career as a vet...... How can a guy who has only averaged 20 ppg once in 7 seasons and averaging 36-37 minutes per game be the franchise player of a 2 time champion level franchise lmao. That is calling Kenny the Jet Smith a franchise player when Hakeem and Drexler are not playing. That is the laughing stock of the entire league again.
He's clearly our best player going into this season but that doesn't automatically make him a "franchise" player. Hopefully he will be surpassed by one if not multiple of our young cats within two seasons.
I guess we disagree on the sanctity of X-Factor. But if X-Factors (and O-Factors for that matter) helps our Xs and Os, I'm all for it.
Do a search on this site for x-factor, and check the “search titles only” option. haha, I guess we are both wildly underestimating how many X-Factors the Rockets have (and had)
Probably similar to how CP3 was the franchise player for all those New Orleans/Clippers teams while averaging over 20ppg only twice in his peak 10-year stretch. And no, FVV isn't quite at the level of playmaking or efficiency that CP3 was during that period, and as such is a worse overall player, but he is similar in other respects. FVV is much better than Kenny ever was, by the way! But yes, having FVV as your franchise player is a little bit pathetic. That's why we're still not a good team (until our young core proves otherwise). Remember, we're coming off a 22 win season here!
The thing is Fred is a combo guard and CP3 is Top 5 PG of All Time. Yes, Fred can do a good job as a PG as well but CP3 who is not a high volume scorer, he can alter the pace of the game. That Fred cannot do as well as CP3, almost nobody can do it the way CP3 can. CP3 has better connections throughout the league with players than FVV ever will.
That is exactly what it is. ..... a 2 year Rental. Calling a rental a franchise player is just a joke itself. I hope he can mentor the kids. That is all he can do in my eyes that could be valuable.

You make a great point, ppg numbers don’t always determine the best players on the team, but that is too much for casual brains to handle, which is exactly why Fvv has been underrated for so many years. Front offices have wised up, which is why he is getting paid appropriately, but clearly some casual fans are still stuck on ppg and fg% like its the 1990s.
Why in the world would he be a 2 year rental? The team doesn’t have its draft pick for the next 3 years and with Udoka is trying to turn the culture around and start winning. How in the hell does getting rid of your best player after 2 years helpful to any of that?
That's eye-opening. @Os Trigonum is the king of X-Factor threads in the last 3 years. Maybe he will start one soon.
Do not consider him a "franchise guy", but for this franchise, based on the facts, the numbers, he's proven to be better than anyone on our roster to this point (29 yrs old). Although I expect a few of our guys move beyond him going forward. Whether it's this yr, next yr or beyond I believe Udoka will bring out the best of this bunch. Only then will we find out who the real franchise guys are.
I like that we went from literally not having a point guard on the roster, and the obvious resulting disfunction, to having one of the best scrappy, veteran point guards in the league, and a potentially generational 2-way point guard prospect. To me that’s the best thing that came out of this offseason, save for the Ime hire. Everything is about to get much better.
I mean this is literally what the front office said this offseason. They were obviously desperate for any competent NBA player they could get to give the team some direction haha. Like, I don't know if matters that much who is our "franchise player", all these threads are kinda silly and tongue-in-cheek and that's kind of the point. We have no superstars, that's just the way it is for now. You gotta show it first before you get called that. But I do agree with CXbby that FVV is our best player right now whether he's a rental or not. (Which remains to be seen.)
Also just an opinion, he might not be when it hits new year or ASB. Lots of talent that can rival FVV IMHO....... a lot of is fluid and not etched in stone. Just because we have 3 more months of non NBA does not change that. This is like stock market xchange or Crypto everything changes.
Hey I'm all in on VV. Think he'll be great for this group. Hopefully an extension of Udoka on the court. He hustles on both ends. Plays unselfish smart ball and he's good on and off ball. If Jalen takes that next step I could see him playing off of JG like Harper with MJ or Fisher with Kobe. And before any of the ish.... I'm not comparing Jalen to those dudes. Just VV's ability to play off ball at times like certain guys did.
