Huh? I feel like you're missing my point entirely. Michael Jordan doesn't play the same position, and also, FVV is nowhere near as good as Michael Jordan. The idea is that we have FVV here to fulfill a specific role (playmaker who runs the offense), and he's adequate at it. Currently the best on the roster, but also not a top 10 leaguewide guy in that role. In the unlikely scenario that our young guys improve to the point that FVV is either the 3rd or 4th best playmaker/offensive quarterback on the team, we would not need to keep him. That would be the best case scenario.
I agree. In my calculations, the only big threat to 2nd Apron is the 1st year of Reeds extension, which is 2028-29. And even then, going over once isn’t enough for the biggest penalties to trigger. It takes 2 years of 2nd Apron for that. The increase of the cap helps protect us from that.
Yeah I think that makes sense. We'd be about $5.6M under the 1st luxury tax threshold if we pick up his option. So pick up his club option contingent upon him extending on a team friendly deal beyond next year, perhaps 4 years / $80M? He can remain as the starter until Reed supplants him then he can settle in as a really good backup PG while we are contending.
This is interesting thought. Like, take the scenario of extending FVV for 3 years, 100m. Instead of having him opt out and sign, he’d opt in and extend at only 27m the last couple of seasons. Is that permissible under the cap? If so, that really gives us a lot of cap flexibility going forward. The one downside is it would probably be difficult to resign Adams. Otherwise, I really like this idea.
We can also create more luxury tax room by opting out of Landale's contract, right? That's 8 million right there.
Correct, every year is non-guaranteed for Landale so that is definitely a possibility to get under that 1st apron. We also have guys like Uncle Jeff, Holiday, and Tate at $5-8M each that can open up space or serve as salary filler in a trade.
The point you seem to be making is that you would rather have a worse player than FVV on the court. FVV can play with Reed and Amen. I suspect those three, maybe not tonight, but at some point this season are going to be torching 2nd units. If both Amen and Reed get to the point that they can run point as good as FVV while FVV is still as good as he is now, those three are going to be a terror in the playoffs.
We'd need a cap expert like @BimaThug to answer for sure. My understanding is the reason why FVV can't be extended is because he's technically only completed 1 year of a 2+1 deal. If the Rockets pick up his option next year he's then on the 2nd anniversary of a 3 year contract and extension eligible. I'm not aware of any limitations on the extension being for a lower dollar figure. But, if allowed it would set us up well as the rest of our young guys' contracts kick in. We really should exhaust all efforts to keep FVV around as a high level starter/role player.
The goal of FVV coming here was to raise the floor, bridge the gap and give these young guys time to find their games. I want Amen starting. I don't care if Fred is backup or traded, but I'm over the bridge. I'm willing to live with Amen's mistakes learning over Fred's mistakes just not being good enough or selling out like that again. The play was foul bait a 3? Ime has to hold Fred accountable like everyone else.
I hope he gets a suspension, maybe we can find more minutes for Reed. didn’t look like he made contact with the official, but I’m sure calling him a b**** to his face and pointing his finger right in his face is frowned upon. 43 million bro… be better.
He was good for us last year, and is generally a very heady player. But, unless we get better shooting we are seriously limited. DD
