Dennis schroder has about the same Player Efficiency Rating and is making about 13. He just got paid because toronto was going to over pay him for his run with them when he was in his prime 21-22. You can see he coming down, should of let him test the open market.
I expected an extra team option year, but it's pretty much what I was thinking ($25m starting salary). Above market value but manageable. Hopefully we see his usage and minutes drop a little too.
People now underrate him once again with some random stats, claiming he’s slow, best when he’s not creating for the team etc. Did those of you who feel that way even watch the Rockets? And those of you who wanted him gone, think about the locker room full of young guys who had FVV & Brooks as the ones setting the culture for the most part and both not being there within a few weeks after the season is over. You think you can just replace FVV’s value on the court with another PG, but that doesn’t take his value into account to the young guys, his IQ and leadership. YOU might not think he’s a good leader or anything worth a damn, but the Rockets young players, Ime and everyone in the organization and league respects that man…I wonder why...
That is a bit too far, by that logic Fred should be running the Rockets for the next 20 years and head to management after that. Oh is he really the only veteran and culture setter out there, who monopolized the Rockets locker room.... Other than superstars, nobody is really irreplaceable, you just have to find another system which Udoker is reluctant and incapable to do. He is not flexible.
I think you are missing his point (or I am missing it). It's not about him being one of the best leaders in the NBA that everyone follows. It is that he is the best leader the Rockets have and one that would be tough to replace. FVV is respected by his peers and by his coach. Durant is clearly the best player, but he is not a leader. Sengun is not a leader. Nobody else on the team truly is a leader. And whoever we might get with the MLE would have an uphill battle. When FVV came to us he was a former all star with a ring and arguably at that time among the best players of the team earning the most money. Together with Brooks he instilled a new culture. A MLE player will probably come in as the 4th or 5th best player of the team, maybe even worse than that and has no prior connection to our team. Sure, a player like that could grow into being a leader, but its far from guaranteed. So yeah, FVV is more valuable to us than to basically all other teams - and his value exceeds the stats he puts up. I doubt he would have gotten 25 per year somewhere else, but I also think we would suffer a lot from losing FVV. So happy with the deal!
Exactly, he’s respected around the league and is invaluable to us right now for all reasons mentioned. You can replace the numbers, but cannot replace the player and what he brings. Even moreso because Durant is not going to orchestrate and be an extension of Ime (right away). FVV is an extension of Ime on the court and that’s what people need to remember. Also, you don’t just get 10+ assists on a regular basis without some PG skills.
I think they wanted to pay him 25m, because they needed another chunk of cap space for a trade down the line. If you didn’t have him it almost certainly would mean you have to include Sengun in a trade for anyone expensive and if you didn’t use Sengun you would have to gut the team. My only fear is that Ime still plays him obnoxious minutes on ball and further punts the development of Amen, Reed, and Cam down the road.
That's definitely a reason why it's beneficial to resign him. The solution to that is to play better and meet the expectations of the head coach and coaching staff. However, Green's 33MPG are gone and will need to be made up somehow. We both agree that FVV played way too many minutes last season (although we disagree on why) so I can't see him getting any more minutes than 35MPG. Ideally it would be around 28MPG next season because realistically Reed and Cam will be held to the same types of expectations as last season.
