How in the heck are the odds stacked against us? We finished a game out last year and we have better depth this year with Yao a year bigger, stronger, and more experienced. You've got to be kidding me with this odds are stacked against us nonsense. Steve is a damn knucklehead.

i agree. the first thing i thought after reading steve's comments was that they sounded like coach-speak. sounds like he is buying into JVG's philosophy and is willing to sink or swim with the TEAM. the west is loaded. if anyone on this board thinks we are a lock to make the playoffs, they are delusional. i optimistically think we will, but some of you are so biased you can't see reality. we are not the only team in the league, pregnant with talent, ready to give birth to a dynasty. you got to bust ass, play team ball, be injury free and just plain get lucky to have a chance at the championship. that's just the way it is.

i like steve's comments. too many people (including various cc.net posters) believe we are a "lock" for the playoffs. these people have it all wrong. THERE ARE NO LOCKS for a 4-time lotto team. NONE.

steve's comments go right in line with what i've been saying all along. the battle to get in the playoffs will be intense. yes, we have the talent to get in - even at a midlevel seed - but it will take hard, hard work and (imo) a gameplan different than rudy & the rox had been using the past 4 years.

GO STEVE! i like your attitude right now....

I have never paid much attention to what Francis (or any player) SAYS. How one plays speaks volumes. At the moment I am optimistic. I have yet to see the team perform, but reports are encouraging.

I don't like the "no more excuses; we've gotta win now" message that JVG is drilling in the player's domes because it puts too much pressure on the team to speed up the transition and JVG is known for not enjoying the game (the journey) as much as he should and pressing perhaps a bit too much, which was fine with a veteran Knicks team, but may be a bit too radical for a young team trying to unlearn old habits (poor shot selection, excessive dribbling and leaving minimal time on the clock to get a good shot off, turnovers via careless passes, and the likes).

I like the raising of the bar, but several nagging injuries, and the natural transition of learning to feed the post consistently will take time and the added pressure of "playoffs or bust THIS year" creates undue pressure that a young team may not be accustomed to handling. High goals for this season-YES, but allow the players to enjoy the game AND the journey as they ascend to the top of the Western conference. Francis needs a healthy BALANCE of changing his negative tendancies and a comfort zone that allows him to be the happy young kid that just flat out loves the game. JVG has to make sure he doesn't press too much, too soon, to the point where he takes the fun out of the game for such a young and enthusiastic team, and shielding the team's psyche from excessive media predictions of failure OR overconfidence on the other extreme will be an ongoing challenge for JVG because younger and inexperienced players (with minimal playoff experience) are more vulnerable to changes in their confidence levels and are more fragile mentally IMO.

I cannot believe that no body notice this, even the Francis-only-fans!!

He said "go out each night and play the game the right way" This is HUGE! He usually says something like 'we will play the game as we always do every night, that is play hard.' Now he is talking with some sense. He used his brain before he openned his mouth!

He has mature in 2 weeks in JVG's training camp! Now we are champoinship bound! A matured Franchise and a experience Dynasty.

    *yawn*

It cuts both ways. It's perfectly reasonable to say either:

    1. He's showing humility, taking nothing for granted, and indicating he's ready to start from scratch.

    or

    2. He's an unambitious lump who is underhandedly attacking the new coach and needs to be tossed into the garbage can, along with all the other losers unwilling to play up to high expectations.

Either cariacature is obviously hyperbole... and elements of both are accurate. Nobody outside of Francis really knows how he feels... so I think it's silly to care much either way.

“so we basically don’t have anything to lose."

    What? No, no, no.

the way you follow “We know the odds are stacked against us as far as even being a playoff team,”

is to say: "so we'll really enjoy proving everyone WRONG."
or perhaps more mildly: "but i know what this team is capable of, so we'll see how it turns out."

JVG needs to work a little on the us-against-the world conditioning...

happy to be an outlet for you to finally be able to use one of your dorky cartoon references. if you don't have anything to add to the thread topic then don't chime in, do the boki pokey and turn yourself around, watch reruns of the Tick, do whatever, but do not post in the thread.

Because this team still has NO one to guard the big 4s, Garnett, Sheed (at 3 or 4), TD. EG, on given nights, D'd up well agaibst the long 4s. Mo can't. Cato is not mobile enough. That's where Rox hurt. Also there is not comparable mismatch for Rox to exploit, unless Yao/SF get it going in tandem.

Steve a knucklehead? He is our knucklehead and this knucklehead is glad!

nobody can defend Garnett or duncan. sheed is a verry good offensive player. i have full confident that yao and cato can guard most big man. every team has some weak points but i do like it that francis is showing humility.

Granted it was just a preseason game against the Spurs, Cato moved exceptionally well around the perimeter when his man stepped out beyond the paint. The man has dropped some serious weight, looks leaner, and moves around the floor a lot better then his previous years.
