I haven't heard of one that high. Iknow alot of v-ball players have high verts. Kiraly has a 47 inch vert.

"I am" is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that "I do" is the longest sentence ?

Gr81 yeah V-ball players are sick. especially the beach guys. they get their heads above the net (which is 8 feet high) no problem. and they are jumping on sand.

Earl "The Goat" Mantigoat was legend to be able to make change on the top of a back board.

you know you all saw the movie.

but that rider crap at 52" is olympic world record material. i dont buy it!!

I'm sorry, I have NO proof, but I remember from the year he won the dunk comp there was a LOT of talk about his ridiculous vertical jump.

As far as that being world record material, I don't get it? Are you talking world record high jump?
The high jump world record is like 230cm+ and 52" is ONLY 130cm. That's not a world record....

Oh, and a LOT of the sport of high jump comes down to technique, it's not always the guy who can jump the highest who will win. I'd be interested to find out what the vertical leap of a high jumper is, but I don't think that hearing about NBA players with 40"+ verticals is unbelievable at all.

    Noogy,

It's no world record, I'm sure, but a 50+ vertical is freakish even by NBA standards. The elite in the NBA are 43+ verticals. Also, I know Rider has some nice hops, but 52"? Wow.

Yeah! That's what I've always thought! I'm sure he can't get that sort of air anymore, but it's always stuck in my mind!

I've got a few points to discuss.

    1) This is concerning Tacoma Park Legend's critisizm of Paul McPherson. I'm not a big fan of him at all, but he has dunked many times in Nba games. I've seen AT LEAST 5 dunks from him on sportscenter over the course of this season. Plus, he used to be a great dunker before he was injured. I'm not saying all of the legends about him are true, but he has some serious rise.

    2) The second point I want to bring up is from the topic. Steve Francis vs Baron Davis. Now, I've watched both of these players extensively since I seem to have a basketball-infatuation with point guards who are great dunkers and can fill up every category of a box-score. I can tell you that Steve easily has more ups. Baron has many spectacular dunks, but he just can't get as high as Franchise. Some of Baron's dunks seem to be much more powerful than Steve's, but much of this can be attributed to Baron's weight since he is considerably larger than Steve in the weight department. The only thing that could be argued is their explosiveness to the rim. However, both players can explode are rise to the rim with the blink of an eye.

    3) This concerns the ludacris remark that someone posted about Isaiah (JR) Rider's vert. There is no way in hell it is or ever has been 52". I'd even argue that his vert has never been over 40". Not even Nique or Jordan ever had a vert that was 52". Think of this: Have you ever seen Rider do anything that is even in the same breath as Vince Carter's dunks? Didn't think so. Carter has been measured as a 40-41" vert and another popular dunker today by the name of Kobe Bryant doesn't even have a vert that is over 40", so I seriously doubt Rider would even have over a 40" vert.

I hope that was some intelligent conversation that you guys might want to argue with. [IMG]

i say that steve and maggete have some of the highest verts in the league.

Maggete is an AMAZING jumper. at Duke he dunked it hung on the rim and slapped the TOP of the backboard(in a game)

Oh yeah Air Bull has some pretty good ups [IMG]

Scottie Pippen had a 43" vertical in his prime.

I'd have to say that Vinsanity MUST have a big (45-48") vertical having seen the ridiculous air he gets.

I merely put down the Isiah Rider thing because that's what I heard at the time he won the dunk comp with his maniacal "LA Funk Dunk" - the guy got his head up there and eyeballed the rim. For a 6'5 player that's quite a rise out of his legs. Rider has also packed on a few pounds since he entered the league and has sustained an injury or two, just because he can't jump anymore doesn't mean that there wasn't a time that he was a fearsome leaper.

It's not unbelievable at all to hear that there are a number of NBA players with 40"+ on their vertical leaps.

Vince Carter has been measured at a 40-41 inch vert. Didn't you see the slam dunk contest? Carter's highest vertical was 37".

P.S. Steve's lowest vertical in the dunk contest was 37" [IMG].

about Ronnie Fields, KG's peer in H.S....get this: i was browsing thru the ABA's website (www.aba2000.com), and found that he's playing for the Chicago Skyliners (http://www.aba2000.com/news/article.cfm?article_id=350).

also, some rockets related news...scott brooks is also playing for the ABA...as is rayford young. i think its worth a browse to see the official rosters of the teams, including the LA Stars which includes notable UCLA nat'l champtionship alum, i.e. toby bailey and the infamous ed o'bannon.

geez, maybe not being in the NBA doesnt mean that much after all...i guess i can sleep easier. haha.

Dadakota, Davis has mashburn, campbell, brown, and wesley. He also plays in the east. Its not fair to compare wins.

I've always wondered exactly how do they measure vertical leap.. How high your hips are from where they started or what?

I think Davis is a good player too, right around Francis caliber.

Not a bad draft, with Francis, Odom, Brand, Davis etc...etc...

Marion, ok. But Bender and Magette? Have those two really done anything yet?

    rocket fan,

there are a few different ways.

there is standing verticle, and running verticle.

both involve. measuring how high you can touch your fingers while standing. than you jump anf touch as high up as possible. do the math, and you have your answer.

the running is simular, but you get 2 steps first i think.
