If you take Yao Ming out, Rockets is like well... Rockets of last year. I don't know what will happens if you take Francis out. He was out most of the last season.
No really. Like you said, Francis was out most of the last season due to headache. So if you take out Yao, Rockets is still a better team than last year. What really happen when you take Yao out is lower team points (10-30 pts lower) and higher opponent's points (opponents score much easier).
I am just thankful that we have a good point guard. If you look back at the history of the Rockets, they usually have good center and average point guard. This is the first time that we have a good combo of Center and guard. I agree that Kidd and Payton are probably better point guard as far as running the team and making decision. There are things that Kidd does better than Steve and there are things that Steve does better. If you want Kidd, he is not available. If you want Payton, he is getting old. So Steve is the best option that we have. May be he is not the top point guard but he is in the top three. There are things that Steve can improve (like correctly point out : turnovers), but doesn't every players have somehting they can improve on? I think this year the turnover is up is due to new players and new offense along with his dribbling of course. But we can only hope with time he can adjust to playing with passing more ( than dribbling). Every players had a weakness but if the team win then it's all that matter.
It's all relative though FA because Stevie has the worst assist/turnover ratio of any starting point guard in the NBA...yikes!!! The guy's an elite player in the NBA but he's not an elite point guard. I'm with the youth movement and I'm starting to see improvement. But I'm not sure Stevie will be the type of PG who makes his teammates better by getting them the ball in the right spots...the only guy he seems to make look better in Cato on alley-oops.
This topic has been discussed pretty well on this message board. It is really not fair to point the finger completely at Steve when Cuttino and Mooch have similar ast to TO ratios. Note also, that it is ridiculous to compare turnover numbers only or assist numbers only; comparing should utilize an inclusive stat like assist to TO ratio. The question is not whether Steve should have a better ast to TO ratio b/c thats a pretty obvious yes. The real questions are will Steve ever approach a 3 to 1 ratio or anything close to that and can the Rockets win with THREE guards that have horrible ast to TO ratios? My take on that is this team will simply continue to be inconsistent with three guards that average this type of ast to TO. The Chronicle mentioned this morning that the Rockets are in the bottom tier of the league in assists and assist to TO, and that just is not winning basketball. Its sad that a team this deep and talented cant maximize its talent b/c the ball simply does not move well enough and effectively enough. While that trend continues, the inconsistency continues imo.
Among the best? Scoring 23.8 ppg is #1 among point guards as is 6.3 rebounds per game. When it comes to scoring and rebounding Steve IS THE BEST IN THE NBA. Steve is on a pace to be one of the all time greats at point guard, and the best is yet to come.....
That is it. We are playing such an individual system whereas it is easy to cause TO. Unlike NJ and Dallas, whereas they pass the ball around before taking an easy and comfortable shots, we panic a shot at the last second very often. Or we simply just force through two or three defenders very often. That is one of the main reasons why both Franchise and Dynasty have so many TO. Once our chemistry and team work has been established, the TO percentage will come down. So, I do not worry about TO. More so, I am looking forward to how they do when Yao Ming and Poisey have fit into our system.
There are four guys who have averaged 20 ppg/ 6 assists/ 6 rebounds a game in their first four years. Steve is one of them, and the only one under 6'4".
Why hasn't the great Smeggysmeg responded to this? He want's to piss on Steve for the sake of Cuttino, but the stats seem to point to Steve as our mvp.
Anyone? Anyone? Should we argue over field goal percentage? How about reboudning per game? Well, how about assists per game? Well, maybe Steve has more experience? Oh no, he doesn't? So, maybe Cuttino hasn't been carrying us this whole time? Stevie's been contributing? You mean to tell me that the only statistical advantage Cuttino has over Steve is FT percentage? Before you people call me a Cuttino hater, let me remind you I have voted for him almost everytime I've voted. I just want you guys to realize what we have in Francis and that you shouldn't be so quick to get rid of him. Steve has carried his load.
Nothing to do with the fact that Steve is a better and more talented player than Cuttino, so people naturally expect more from him? And people are not criticizing. They just hope one of our players to improve and correct his mistake. Read before you post please.
Well, after last year, many considered Cuttino more talented than Steve. Cat shot better from the field that year. Now, since Steve actually shoots better (this year), Stevie's critics point to Steve's other faults. And, if I wanted people to "improve," I would point out that basketball is about height and Steve is not 6 inches taller than the average PG. Yao is 6 inches taller than the average center. What is sad is that people have dogged Steve for 4 years, yet statistically he's the best player. This makes me very disappinted. I have voted straight Houston Rockets for the all-star team for the last two months; your post is rude and assinine. It's very telling and sad. And before you get into "you just love steve, blah, blah , blah," let me remind you that ao is actually my favorite player and my brother's good friend is Yao's minister.
I'm assuming you are Chinese. Your post was rude. If you don't understand, I will type in English/Mandarin: Woa shu yee gau jong gao yen.
I would like to know exactly who it was that considered Cat a better player than Steve...I doubt many sane people did. I don't understand your point. Steve is shorter then Yao and is a better player than Yao, so he should be allowed to have a crummy assist/TO ratio? Just because we criticise doesn't mean we aren't fans and support the Rox all the way. I know Stevie's our best player. All I was trying to determine with my initial post was whether people consider this stat a problem and if they think he'll improve upon it. Thanks to everyone for their input. Hopefully we'll see this number turn around soon. If so, I'd expect the Rox to start winning even more games. ps - Cat's ratio is worse because he's a SG. They aren't supposed to pass the ball as much as the PG. Look at Paul Pierce's ratio...1.19
You know that I did actually type something phonetically in Mandarin, right? I didn't want a stigma to develop that I hated Yao because of my having to defend Steve. If any other player would have scored 26 and dished 9 assists (in 32 minutes) against Milwaukee we'd be riding his jock.
