Let's make Cato and Ming our go to guys because Ming is shooting 54% and Cato usually shoots over 50 percent. We would win about 5 games, out of 82.
I agree that 48% is a pretty good average for the guards, even for the inside players. But why would you take that many shots as a PG when you have an inside guy who can shoot 50%+? BTW, where did you get the impression that Yao won't be able to shot 54%, or even higher with more shooting? NBA has always been a big man's game. The shooting percentage leaders are almost always inside players. Yao has as good a shooting touch as any of the big men in the league. The only problem is that the Rockets is a guard centered team, it's too fast for him. Put him in a half court style team like the Jazz, he'll easily score 20+ with 55%+. I don't think he'll be good enough to get 10+ board due to his lack of speed though. People come here to talk about bball. You can agree/disagree with others, but don't bring any personal attack garbage here.
As a chinese who became rockets fan simple of yao ming, it never bothers me wether Francis could shoot over 50% or even down to 35% FG. What pissed me off is that he seriously lacking in setting play and passing the ball. Remember, he plays the role of QB for football or scheme master for scoor tram. Besides, Yao Ming do not need to put his FG up to 50% to justify his demanding the ball. If he can post up as he keeping improving his physical strenth, he should get more touches. Steve's fancy moves due to his amizing astheletism and making winning shot once in while as seen in last game belies his serious lack of setting paly for rockets. Do not blame other players for not moving. If you are PG, you supposed to dictate your man how to move and where to move. If you hog the ball, and they move around and find they never become the recipent, they got pissed off and do not want to move any more. Stats might be misleading. Assistance resulting from a desperate pass is hugely different from assistance from passing the ball to the open man after the guard does the penerate and dish out thing intentionally.
daoshi, you don't know what you are talking about! you are seriously stupid! you are also only a junior member! and you don't love steve! steve rules! he is so awesome! i love steve! i love him with all my heart! rockets would suck without him! if you give yao the ball a little more, that takes away shots from steve! if you take away a few shots from steve, you must want yao to be the goto guy! you must want steve to fail! i want to watch steve shoot and dribble as much as possible! i just love to watch him shoot and dribble! why do you hate steve! it's because you are the craziest person on the planet!
To hamachi I start thinking that you just a highschool kid who knows little about fundermentals but flashes. This mentality is killing american basketballs. Look at what they did at WC. Had been as athletic as American players, Argentina would easily beat any of nba team including LA beacus Shark would be fouled out for his offensive fouls if international rule applied to him.
Instead of calling the kid dumb, why don't you just address what he's saying. If someone who didn't know basketball said this, and clearly this guy doesn't....it would sound like a good point. The reason is turt, is that while Ming has made 54% of his shots, most of those have been off of dunks. If Ming could dunk the ball ever time, sure, they should pass it to him...but it doesn't work that way. Most of the time he's ten feet from the basket where he's shooting like 5%.
First off, Hamachi, would u said was absurd about loving to watch steve dribble and shoot, that's not team basketball. Look I enjoy And 1 as much as anybody body but a pg, even a scoring one's responsiblity is to the team. Steve is actually better at sharing the ball this year and i think he should do it even more if the Rox are to improve. Look at Bibby, Payton (hell even Marbury), all scoring PG but also get their teamates involved. To BBen. US basketball still have a lot of fundamental left, most elite teams do have chemistry like dallas, NJ, LA etc. and I don't think flash really hurt American Basketball (it makes it more entertaining and last time I checked NBA was in the entertainment business). The only reason US lost was becuz of second tier players, coach known for team meltdowns(seattle and milwakee) and not to mention most players don't actually play with each other and the national roster is almost always very volatile. To New Yorker, I've seen Yao shoot and I would say he can atleast shoot 40% 10 feet way. Probly around 50%. He will defiinitely shoot better than 5%, don't let your disappointment of NY not being able to get him make u hate him. You know u wished NY could've gotten him with Camby instead of McDyss.
bben212, wizkid83: I thought what I posted was so totally ridiculous that it was obvious I was mocking somebody -- not expressing my own opinion. Sorry, not so funny, and I know the target is just a kid -- just couldn't help myself.
To wizkid83. I did not deny the fact that US basketball still have a lot of fundamental left. What I really want to address is that US players tend to play more flashes rather than sticking to the fundamentals (especially those young guys who just enter NBA). I think it is due to the commercialization of NBA. High stats means big prospective big contract. Fancy dunk means sport center highlight. Commercialization made NBA a huge success. It would also possibly kill NBA someday if this mentality keeps increasing. Players get mature and start playing team basketball over years. They also know that they benefit from playing team basketball. However, I really dislike the way of sports media do. The media does not help people develop good team ball mentality. From the game last night, commentators hardly analyzed the scheme of set play of both teams. They never address anything on each single play. They kept talking something like personal stats comparison, size issue, quickness issue for a typical player, or whatever. I started wondering do they really have any knowledge of basketball? Soprtcenter does the same way. Nothing but showing highlights. No insightful research on play scheme or things like that is presented by sportcenter. This is pathetic. I feel like I am learning nothing from what they say. I just watch a melodrama which has some interesting scenario like CB is gona kiss someone¡¯s ass if Yao does something bola bola bola. The way they do just hurts the feeling of true fans because they want to know knowledge from some people on tv who are supposed to be sort of experts. Not watching shows!
Ming might shoot 21/21 if given the chance! Steve & Cat hog the ball way TOOOOOO much IMO. Mings Jumper is just has good as those ball HOGs. Ming should get the Rock more than 5 times per game.If Steve & Cat are as good as people think than we should top in the conference. Greats players make others better than they really are. Supposedly we have 2 great players ( steve & cat ). ????????? ENOUGH SAID. SO PASS THE ROCK TO MING!
Yeah but hey, like I said, NBA is a entertainment industry, and the flash is the reason that its as popular today as it is. Remember in the early years, ppl would watch the Harlem Globetrotter half times shows and leave during the game becuz it was boring. True players are playing more for contracts and stuff, but hey if you're in their posistion where 4 pts more a game could mean 1 mil/ year, wouldn't u play more for the money? I like the NBA even with all the flashes, and I don't think its gonna die any time soon, infact look at And 1 actual streetball, its growing in number of fans and the talent level isn't even close to the NBA. What are u talking about, ppl love conflicts, this country's complete media system is based on controversy, think Lewinsky and Clinton. Most fans of this sport loves it when an actual show is put on. Infact what the NBA is really lacking today is an actual show. Sure Sac and LA almost have a rivalry worth watching now, but man, its nothing like how LA Celtics, Chicago NY, Chicago Detroit, or even Houston Utah used to be. Fans of one team actually has real deep hatred towards the fans of the other team/city. Those were the days when winning or losing a game is close to life and death to fans, if u ask me, their isn't enough controversy in the NBA and leads to not enough conflict. Man I be following every game now just becuz I want Barkley to pucker up. This is waht sells and this is what ppl like.
Great - Mings shooting is improving - now if only he can hold his opponent under 98% shooting we should be able to find a little more court time and a few more shots for him!
Yes, Ming is a high-percentage shooter, like tonight 6-6. Amazing, we are still not gaining ground. Why? It was because he has not had chemistry with his teammates, having missed most of the pre-season. Look at what his teammates did when he was on the floor. They did not know the play - they rarely made a move. In fact, look at the stat. JH 0-2. Moochie 0-3. Cat 2-6 and MT 1-4 and Steve 2-6. Well, with more playing time. I am sure they will develop the communication and chemistry. But before that, it is not easy to have Ming on the floor when the game is on the line. It might be an exception in the last play when we lost to Phoenix because our small ineup was proven ineffective in the previous few minutes. Yet, I think it is not a bad thread. Ming should get more shots; but I don't mean Steve should get less. It depends on the game situation, when Ming's shots come from. Maybe that comes from the player who is cold that night. No fixed formulae in the game, right. We have to react to the opponent too.
* In my best Yetti impersonation * turtle:- There is a special aquarium at the Virginia Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach, especially for turtles! Any more like this one and transportation to a turtle scientist and on to VA, can be arranged!
Do you mean his opponent, or his teammates' opponents. So far I dont see any other centers scoring over him at will. As a matter of fact, Steve hasn't played much of a good defense on his own man. Let see if he could keep his opponent under 98%. Boy, I almost sound as ridiculously as you do.
It's hard not to notice. Even Rudy T noticed. When a guy scores 20 points on 100% field goal shooting you have to start making more effort to get him the ball. Hey, Ming got 22 minutes last night, so I think the obvious is sinking in. He'll get more touches cause he puts more balls in the hole per attempt than anyone else. Ming's points per scoring attempt is currently an astronomical 1.353. And this is to take nothing away from the team or our starters, but clearly, Ming is the 6th man now and needs to get the ball once he enters the game. David.
