Then you need to do a better job of clarifying your request.

That being said, I thought it was common knowledge about the trend to offer early retirement packages in America today. Apparently not.

I googled "early retirement" and found this nugget in the 1st page of hits.

GM to offer early retirement package for employees

At the end of the article, GM says this:
Are you seriosly asking for evidence about America's trend to keep younger workers? It makes financial sense because younger workers earn less money. It all goes back to dollers and sense. The human element involved is that older people in America have a harder time finding work. Are you really contending that point?

Why must you always fall into your typical MO?
    1. Find a way to pick a fight w/ a liberal.
    2. Liberal responds to your trap.
    3. You make a "simple" request for facts about an immensly complex topic and throw in an insult, to boot.
    4. Then derail the topic or disappear.

Some things are just obvious to MOST people. If I say the earth is round, do I really need to give you a link? Boy, you are tiresome. But in this case, I'll play your game since it is so easy.

That's it. I'm done talking to you about anything business or economy related. You're clearly ignorant about the entire field. Showing me that one company offered early retirement to employees (by the way - not the same as firing - could be a very rich package...) and claiming that there is a general problem in America with firing older employees is just beyond belief ignorant.

Enacting laws to prevent someone from working harder is just plain stupid.

What are you talking about? Krosfyah, gave you a link to back up his claim that some American companies are separating from the old and bringing in the new.

If you don't like his point, why don't you critique his stance rather than insult him and claim a higher level of intelligence. He made a statement, you insulted him (which speaks volumes about your intelligence) and he posts an article to back up his claim, what more do you want? If you're going to bring up a subject and receive other opinions that may differ from your own have an open mind to accept them or don't bother replying.

I knew you would nit-pik me on the usage of the word "firing." Fire, let-go, downsize, incentivized retirement...whatever you want to call it. The net-net is the same. America likes to employ younger people while France likes to employ older people. That's my point texxx. But if you want to derail YOUR OWN THREAD by nailing me against the wall on superficial semantic arguments...so be it.

I'll continue this discussion in a civil manor (without name calling) if you like.

hahaha. You're done because I proved my point. You have yet to actually make a point yourself. Instead you just try to discredit my point...poorly, btw. A Karl Rove tactic but Karl Rove...you are not.

If I showed you proof from 5 major companies, would that satisfy you? If not 5, then how many? I can't wait to hear you response because this will perhaps be the easiest point I've ever refuted here. Please respond to this question.

What does the size of the package have to do with it? Unemployed is unemployed.

Every country, person, thing, entity has pros and cons. You pointed out a "con" from France (presumabely because many conservatives hate France for no particular rational reason). So I took the opportunity to point out that America isn't without it's faults either. America is a GREAT country but we still have some room for improvement...as does France.

This thread is like watching two people play a one-on-one game of basketball. One person is winning and has scored 8 points the other (of course) is losing and has scored 4 -- unfortunately the losing player owns the ball.

At some point instead of playing the game to its conclusion the losing player grabs his ball and walks off the court proclaiming victory for some obscure reason (ie) ‘that guy was shooting too many fadeaways’ ~ ‘that dude is too sweaty’ etc.
    ___

This is also a classic French battle tactic... ;)

I can give an instance of a "business" deliberately attempting to get senior staff to retire, with the threat of being laid off in the not to distant future hanging over the heads of many... the State of Texas. They gave an incentive of 25% of your annual salary to take early retirement. Behind that threat were sweeping reductions in state employees due to a lack of political courage, combined with eagerly giving business various goodies, that caused the current leadership to cut taxes while faced with a massive budget shortfall. Sound familiar?

The result was far more senior state employees taking the incentive than was anticipated, in large part because they were fed up with not getting pay increases worth mentioning in years, having the cost of their insurance go up far faster than any pay increase they did get, and generally being asked to do too much at the same time, due to staff reductions. In short, they were tired of being crapped on, took the money and early retirement, going, in many cases, straight into the private sector, which they had known for years could pay them more, but they chose the security and defined benefits of state employment instead. Hell, many of them, believe it or not, thought they were serving the public. What a concept!

If you don't believe me, texxx, google it up. The information is out there. This has hurt the state. The very people with expertise and vast amounts of institution memory of how things are done, in the state political arena, split... to be replaced with green college grads who were cheaper, but didn't know what they were doing, in the main, and had the very people who would have been glad to show them and mentor them gone. Pretty damned stupid, if you ask me.

LOL - you just gave me an example from the state government. If the government is representative of the entire US economy (a liberal's dream, perhaps??), then we have a real problem on our hands. As for the government cutting costs in this way, I'm all for it - they're taking being paid for by my tax dollars.

That was incoherent, texxx. Can't you do better than that?

Texxx, care to respond to my question that I specifically asked of you?

Or is this #4 on your typical BBS posting pattern.

    Texxx's MO:

    1. Find a way to pick a fight w/ a liberal.
    2. Liberal responds to your trap.
    3. You make a "simple" request for facts about an immensly complex topic and throw in a token pre-emptive insult.
    4. Then derail the topic or disappear.

How many companies do I need to provide you before you acknowledge a trend?

You asked for facts and facts were provided...but you didn't like them...apparently...because you launched a few insults. Two MAJOR employers have already been provided for you (GM and State of Texas) but that apparently isn't enough. So please, what data do you need to satisfy your "skepticism"?

    Thanks in Advance.

Why is it when someone digs up some negative stuff about France - some Americans (who I assume are liberals) feel compelled to criticize the US?

If the US is in some sort of contest with France - I don't think there's any doubts which is the "better" country.

Isn't the number of French people emigrating to the US far greater than the number of Americans emigrating to the US? Immigrants from China to the US far outnumber Chinese-to-France..

See, your problem is that your data does not support your claim. Just because companies offer early retirement does not mean much. They are looking for ways to cut heads, and they give people the offer of retiring early. How do you know how many young people they failed to hire because of the same business problems that made them look to cut heads? The answer is you don’t know. How many younger employees were fired when others were offered early retirement? You need to show me a LOT more evidence before I believe that America callously mistreats older employees in favor of the younger ones. You made the claim, you need to back it up.

This is like what happened in the 80's when there was an exodus of Ninjas from Japan. They ended up finding new jobs in the movie industry, and awesomeness ensued.

Considering that most French people are chefs, I'll be looking forward to lots of french fries and other food that sounds like it's French, like uh....y'know, French stuff.

Ding Ding Ding Ding. Operative word being..."retiring." 25 year olds don't get offered retirement packages. Yes, they want to cut heads but companies would rather cut the older workforce for several reasons.

    Business Week.

CHRYSLER PACKAGE: Although the offers vary widely from company to company, a typical package pushes early retirees closer to full-retirement benefits by giving them two to five years of added age and service credit. One of the packages Chrysler is offering allows those who are at least 53, have worked at the company for at least 10 years, and earn less than $85,000 annually to get the same pension and health-care benefits they would receive if they were 62, the company's usual retirement age.

I don't even know what you are saying here. How is the failure of hiring young people relevant to whether American companies are letting go their older workforce?

Most corporations would rather cut the older folks through early retirement before general firings. See the article I already linked above.

I still don't know what your point is for posting the article. What point are you making?

    Yawn...getting bored.

I think most conservatives disdain France because we do not like their pseudo-Socialist economic system and labor laws. This antipathy far outdates any Iraqi war. I also think a lot of negative vacation experiences also fuel the fire. I also do not think it is out of the question to say that the French are arrogant towards the US.

Some Ninjas did that but I can tell you as a former Ninja myself I went back to school and finished my degree and then got a masters in Architecture. You would find out how handy Ninja skills come in when making construction site visits. If I have to get up and inspect a roof I just run up it.
