Goodwill is goofy. Its essentially give stuff to us so we can give people a job by washing and selling it. There is nothing different about them than any thrift store except they don't pay you for your stuff. Goodwill is also the charity where the a few years back, the CEO got busted for living the good life on the contributions like a private jet and a luxury Manhattan apartment for his mistress.

What's the big deal? I don't know why you'd not give your money to a non-profit organization because of this.

At least they won't kill him like in some countries, but that is real bad, he cannot marry the woman of his choosing? What century is this?

Whatever beliefs they have internally isn't really of my concern; more so it's 'their business' not mine. Just like whatever Yao does at home isn't of my concern. But the actions and what they they do physically/externally thats important. Thus say while I don't care what Yao does at home, the money I spend going to a game that ends up in his paycheck is money well spent as he's very productive.

What I'm saying is the Salvation Army goes far be of and beyond to help then the other charities, when others will give up they keep hope. The money I donate I KNOW is going to help others.

When my dad was shot in Vietnam the Red Cross gave up but the Salvation Army came through, other-wise He'd be living with one leg at best and I wouldn't be sitting here writing this right now at worst.

They don't try to force anyone to believe in their 'views' for help, they help and go all out either way. It's members know before they join their beliefs and either accept them or deny them, that's none of my business.

Well, at least he didn't become a rear admiral in the Salvation Navy -- if you know what I mean.

I agree that sounds very cultish to me.
HOWEVER, if you guys never knew they were religiously associated and only a charity... then it seems like they did their job well. Would you have rather they been in your face with their religion? No. Instead they were upfront with them being a charity and the religious part they obviously didn't market.

His severance package will be a box of second hand clothes and a can of green beans.

That was easily the weirdest random fact I've learned in 2008.

The Salvation Army is kind of weird. But when you consider who they preach to, it's kind of understandable why they formed a denomination.

"The Salvation Army's main converts were at first alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes and other "undesirables" of society. These "undesirables" were not welcomed into polite Christian society, which helped prompt the Booths to start their own church."

I've been to a lot of churches, and I don't recall homeless people or hookers being in any of them. (Plenty of drunks and druggies, though.) I'd like to think the Salvation Army is different.

In the U.S., the Salvation Army started earning respect following their relief efforts after the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. They might be a little nuts, but aren't we all, and they're doing good work that nobody else has the guts to do.

I don't think it is cultish; I think it is monastery-like. The idea behind their organization is that they are part of the army of God , so they have extra rules to maintain a higher discipline than among the laity. After all, this guy is an officer in the organization, not a mere volunteer. And, I don't think it's because they disapprove of people outside of the organization, but simply that they feel their officers should be wholly devoted if they are going to be involved. So, he's free to marry whomever, but he might not be sufficiently focused on the work of the Salvation Army to be allowed to continue as an officer.
