I think everyone in Houston wants him here for the fact that he was and always will be the "junkyard dog" he really fought for everything and had that fire and god knows we need it in some of our players.
I think this a damn good move. Adelman is a damn good coach and had coached some REALLY good teams, those Kings teams were ridiculous, they just had some injury issues and ran into a Lakers dynasty. If we can do a couple of things in personnel like Bibby and maybe a 4, this offense could improve dramatically. Under JVG the offense was pathetic. I have never seen a team struggle to score and even get shots like the Rockets did. The offense was terribly inefficient. Yao or Tmac score 1 on 1 or jack up a 3, thats your offense. A team with two of the best offensive forces in the game, and we can score any points or get good shots. ZERO easy buckets on fast break points or anywhere else. Yao's strength is not great at banging down on the low block, especially for 7 games against physical teams. The guy has got great touch and can shoot the ball, which I hope will be used under Adelman. Yao shoots almost 90% from the line, no reason he can knock down midrange shots, I see him durin g warmups knock down 20 footers consistently. I also think putting hime in the high post and facing up will cut down on his turnovers. Yao' reflexes and reaction time are slow and he gets the ball stripped away from behind before he knows what hit them. If he faces up on the defender he can hold the ball up high, see what's going on better and just shoot it. I also think it could do numbers for t-mac also. He won't have to work so hard to get shots, and won't have to work so hard at getting others involved. T-mac might actually get set up for an easy one for once. JVG took a 32 ppg scoring champion and turned him into a point guard. And don't blame the back, because his last yr in Orlando when he scored 32.1 ppg, he sat out the end of the season with back injury as well. I expect t-mac to be a 30 ppg scorer under Adelman. This is a good day for Rockets fans.
FIRE ADELMAN!!! (j/k) I hope this works out. I must admit that after watching the playoffs, something major needed to be shaken up. That team was not going anywhere. Go Rockets 07-08!!
I like the choice for Adelman. He did very well with the Kings. Remember how productive he made Vlade with the Kings? Just imagine how much better he will make Yao. Plus, unlike Larry Brown, you can bank on Adelman being here for a real long time. And he did coach Bonzi Wells in the 2006 playoffs. Maybe that means Bonzi will want to stay.
do you guys honestly think yao is going to play better than he did before the injury this last season? the guy was a wrecking crew. he was putting up MVP-caliber numbers. i can not imagine yao getting better than that...or being utilized any better than that.
The fact that he could have been that third scoring option we despratly needed in the playoffs. Someone who can create a shot and take some pressure off the 2 big guys.
Why H-town media is so slow? Chinese media reported it two days ago that Adelman was hired for 3mils per.
it's like we're the only voices of reason left on here..... this rockets team gets just slightly more consistent shooting from it's guards (head and rafer) throughout the season and playoffs and we'd be sitting in the conference finals. this is the same team that beat the sixers by 50 freakin' points. unfortunately, it was our personnel that couldn't put in the ball in the basket when getting wide open looks that doomed us.... not poor coaching.
I don't ever see Yao being a high teens average rebounder in his career. Maybe 10rpg but not anywhere like 13-15 rpg.
China fans are happy. This story actually came out 2 hours ago with the headline that he his the new coach. Ironically, Adelman was the coach of the Kings when they played the Rockets in Shanghai and Beijing a couple of years ago. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/sports/2007-05/22/content_877592.htm Yao's home fans welcome new coach By Zhao Rui (China Daily) Updated: 2007-05-22 08:43 Chinese fans have hailed the appointment of Rick Adelman as the new coach of Houston Rockets, home of All-Star center Yao Ming. The Rockets fired Jeff Van Gundy after the team lost to Utah Jazz 4-3 in the first round of the NBA Playoffs earlier this month and announced it has settled on Adelman as leading candidate. "The former head coach of Sacramento Kings had talks with Rockets chiefs and is likely to take his new post in the coming days," Sohu.com reported yesterday. "Van Gundy should be responsible for the humiliating setback and Adelman is a good subtitute." In a poll conducted by the website, 53 per cent of fans believe Adelman is a better coach for the Rockets while only 37 per cent said they are sorry for Van Gundy's exit. "I support Adelman for sure," said Liu Ailin, a member of the Rockets Fans Circle, a fan group in Beijing. "I like his fast style and outside attack. This is obviously a great move, the Rockets played dull basketball this season. They should be more passionate as they have the best scorers in the league - Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. They should be more successful than they were in the playoffs." Adelman is reportedly Houston's only target since he met with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander and general manager Daryl Morey last week. He has met several times with Morey since. Morey would not talk about Adelman specifically, but if hired, Adelman would have the best career winning percentage of any Rockets coach. Adelman, 60, is 752-481 in 16 seasons as an NBA coach, reaching the NBA Finals with Portland in 1990 and 1992. He has a 70-68 postseason record. He also would join Rudy Tomjanovich as the only former Rockets players to become coach. Adelman took Sacramento to the Western Conference finals in the 2001-02 season, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in overtime of Game 7. He was fired as Kings coach after the 2005-06 season and did not coach last season. Van Gundy himself said Adelman is the first choice to replace him. "He is a great coach and an even better man," Van Gundy said. "They'll have tremendous coaching coupled with a group of very, very good, hard-playing professional players. Hopefully, they'll break through next year." However, there was some sympathy for the departed coach. "I will miss him, we shouldn't deny him just because we lost to the Jazz in the first round," said Luo Qi, a Rockets fan in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. "The team chemistry was good and the players were playing hard. The Rockets just need a few more pieces to complete the roster to be the top team in the league." Despite playing without Yao and McGrady or both for more than half the season, the Rockets finished 52-30, their best record in 10 years. Van Gundy is 430-318 in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, the best career winning percentage of any of the Rockets' 10 previous coaches. His 182-146 record in four seasons with the Rockets is second only to Rudy Tomjanovich.
the same damn guy who (((((allegedely)))) said "they [the rockets] are only paying me 1/4 of what i'm worth, so i'm only going to put in 1/4 the effort"??? and you want him back on this team???? no wonder so many people here hate jvg. you people worry so much on what potentially could be rather than what currently is.
