Even if he can muster something for this season upcoming and then retire means that we can't get on with the changeover in his position for another year.
The Rockets must move forward and develop their Roster.

Not the way I look at it, it just means one less thing we have to worry about taking this offseason. By getting him signed that just means we have one less position about worrying about since our weakness of a PG, PF, far exceeds the needs for a backup C, who even if we do go younger wont really need since we already have a C who puts up about 25 pts a game and 9 rebounds 2-3 blocks. Mutombo though is very old is a very serviceable backup C. The Rockets wont be able to fix all their needs this offseason why bother fixing something that doesn't really need fixed.

Deke's coming back?? Yay!!!!! Maybe without JVG we can see a little bit of the twin towers game. Or maybe we can see Deke do what he did last year and that was to block shots and be a major rebounding force in the post. I think Deke is getting excited about the possibilities of the new offense and what he can bring defensively. Deke by all notions is a defensive force and has been his entire career. Deke is the workhorse that all teams need and he grabs the short rebounds and gets his points with putbacks and tip-ins. We can always use a guy like that.

Could you explain this part more? I am always confused about how this works. Doesn't his salary still counts toward the salary cap?

Yes his salary does count against the cap but it wont effect us on our Mid level exception, or lower level exception. The Rockets are already over the cap as it is. Us taking his lets say 2 mill a year wont help us sign Mike Bibby, or Ron Artest. The Rockets mid level exception is for what I believe is 5.5 they can offer to a player or group of players like they did with Bonzi, Novak, Lucas and V-span. The lower level exception can be up to 2.1 million. Teams over the salary cap get those exceptions every year.

With Yao playing heavy minutes, a backup C isn't the most pressing need.

If the Rockets play more up tempo, Yao's minutes may go down slightly because of his endurance issues.

Man... How quickly yall forget. Mutombo's inability to fit into Adelman's gameplan in my opinion says more negative things about his coaching style than it does Mutombo's game. Deke didn't just keep us afloat when Yao wen't down, he had us in contention for the 3rd seed at one point. 20 rebound games, wagging fingers, 1st man to cheer off the bench.

Mutombo embodies everything a backup veteran center SHOULD be. I can't believe we are begging for centers that can pass and hit the mid range jumper. I want my big men to play like big men. I want the 3rd or 4th best backup center in the entire league back. But I guess we need someone "sexy". Because thats what wins championships right.

Remember the Spurs started Mohammed last year, the Mavs Dampiere, the Pistons had Wallace and then Mohammed, the Heat had Shaq, etc... But wait. Lets get a more "Adelman" style guy, an offense oriented guy. Ya, because that works. Thats what advances you in May. Right?

Oh and by the way... Signing Mutombo back will not hurt our cap situation. We are maxed no matter what, we have exceptions to use no matter what. If Adelman can't find a use for Mutombo then he isn't a good coach.

good news. he should be back for the minimum.

remember that adleman puts players in possition to succeed. just because some big guys will be asked to play the high post, that doesn't mean that if you can't play high post he doesn't want you.

adleman found great use for scott pollard off the bench in sacramento. deke will set picks and hover around the basket for easy layups.

Exacly. people have this silly notion that Adelman coched teamsfor whatever reason dont play defense. in 2001-2002 kings were the best defensive team in the league. they had a certian scott pollard do the dirty work. much like deke will do. the TrailBlazers had a certian slow kevin Duckworth keeping there defense together. trust me,deke is a upgrade over duckworth.

    Let's see...

Deke had one foot out of the doorway because he got zip playing time in the playoffs...Deke has played against Adelman coached teams for many, many years and knows what to expect since he had to defend against them...Deke can be had for a vet minimum....Deke thinks he can play for Adelman....

So my choices are believe Deke or CF posters....Hmmmmmm.....

    Bring it on, Deke!

He has earned his way back onto this team by playing above expectations the last 2 years. He's a positive influence on the team and he has a real defensive presence when hes on the court. What more could you ask for from your 3rd string center? Anyone who doesnt want Deke back is  . There arent many if any 3rd srtg C's that bring what he does to a team.

Plus it would be nice for him to retire a Rocket with the shot blocking record.
