Fist of all, I am a complete Adelman supporter and I agree that he and his staff deserve extensions.

Having said that, there are a few things I found odd about this news:

    1. From the article: "Adelman said he will not approach team management about his or his staff's contractual situations. His focus will be to coach the Rockets."

By going to the media with all of this, he is effectively putting more pressue on management than if he did the same behind closed doors. Had he expressed this to them privately, he only makes his concerns known to the front office. As it is, fans are aware, the media is aware and management is aware of his feelings on the matter. This approach will likely be more effective in accomplishing his goal because it places more pressure on the higher ups but it also seems like the wrong way to go about it. It's not something I would have envisioned Adelman doing.

    2. It seems somewhat hypocritical to do this after openly criticizing McGrady last season for talking to Stephen A. Smith before he and the team. How different is this really than that situation?

And I'm saying this from the standpoint of a fan who has not only given up on McGrady but is also a supporter of Adelman.

    3. He is really worried about this coming season.

As fans, especially those of us predicting doom and gloom for next season, it's only natural to fear the worst. But as the head coach, you at least need to feign confidence. He's made a few comments recently through the media that seem to be signalling that he knows this team has no chance. Again, that may be obvious to you and I but it doesn't seem like something the coach should be conveying to the public before we've even played our first game.

As a final point, I assume some of you will say that reporters asked him questions and he simply answered them. My response would be that it's their job to get as much material as possible out of players, coaches, GMs, etc... That doesn't mean you bite every time they throw out some bait. There are times where you just don't answer questions because it's not in the best interest of certain parties to do so.

Meh said it all, but if Rick takes this team to the second round of the playoffs. He diserves a big extension, and coach of the year!!!

In pro sports, especially with head coaches, the sentiment is definitely "what have you done for me lately?". Most of us are expecting the Rox to have a down year due to injuries, so I hope there's no pressure on Adelman if we're sitting at 27-40 in April and out of the race for the #8 playoff spot. I would like him to sign an extension now so that we don't have any coaching questions as we try to nab some FA's next summer.

I think he will def get an extention. I hope he is the rockets coach for as long as he wants to be coaching. He is a great coach...i think his track record (except for GS but hell, everyone fails with them) speaks for itself..

I think he'll get the extension he's looking for but I think Les and Morey will look to see how Rick does this year.

    1. We all know expectations are very low this year. With that said, can Rick still keep the players wanting to complete out there? If the team gives up at some point of this year, I think there's always that risk for him where the Rockets don't pick up his option.

    2. Will this team finally learn his offense? That's one of the main reasons he was brought here. JVG was a great coach on defense but management wanted more offense. Everyone was tired for 80 point wins. They aren't sexy to the fan base.

Overall, I think he's a very solid coach. Is he perfect? No but He's one of the best in the business.

If the Rockets decide not to move forward with him, I would love to see them get Bryon Scott. There's a lot of rumors that this will be his last year with NO.

Nope you aren't the only person. I thought Adelman wanted more rent-a-cops in the Toyota center.

I have a suspicion that Berman asked him about his contract and it effects him going into the year. I think Berman probably led him to talk about it.

Morey has got to give Adelman that extension. Well deserving for the organization.

If you're adelman, why would you sign a extension when portland and la might be availible after the season?

I would almost say there's no chance that Adelman goes to LA.

I have a hard time seeing Portland not pick up Nate's contract either. He has done wonders for that franchise.

Houston is a pretty demanding sports market when it comes to basketball. He's probably uncertain how they will react to this season without Yao and a bunch of young/role players looking to create an identity. I don't see any reason for him to leave Houston - this team has been overturned to suit his coaching style and they have the role players to seriously compete with a thriving Yao or McGrady playing within his limits + a notable free agent signing next year. This season is foreplay for what's to come, but it might not manifest itself in wins.

Really? How did you come to that conclusion?

I would think that fans here are relatively undemanding compared to other markets.

Absolutely incorrect. This is a town where people only take interest in a team when they start winning, where noticeable pride only comes after 22 game winning streaks or superhuman performances. Most major metropolises are like that due to a busy business environment and having a variety of other things to do. And given Houston basketball resulted in the city's first two championships in the mid 90's, people are going to be demanding.

Why wouldn't he go to La? Any odd reason why not? He's a basketball coach that wants the best chance at a title. If Jackson walks away, why wouldn't he be a optione? Are u thinking about the petty stuff when he was with the kings? Nate is a good coach on a year to year cntract, but adelman is betterr,is a legend there, and pportland has more talent that is younger with a owner that has deep pockets. If you're adelman, why wouldn't you lobby for portland if you don't get the money or power that you want?

I see your point, leebigez, but I honestly can't think of a single time when an NBA coach left his current team that wants him to stay, in order to pursue what he feels is a better opportunity somewhere else. Can you? For whatever reasons, it seems like FA coaches don't think like FA players do.

Nate did the exact same thing to sseattle. He had just come off a good seasoon but knew the team wass upp for sale. He knew porrtland had picks, yung players, and the 4th richest man in the world as a ownerr. I look at stuff as if it were me. I am a tier 1 coach and a fa. I see my old team is stacked and the greatest franchise over the last 30 yrs coach just retired. What would I do?

That makes you think maybe he has already been to Les about it and he said to wait till the season is over. But I cant see Les not resigning Adelman... But it makes you think.
