Well I'm not gonna choose any sides here other than to say that if you do something like this as a news organization....you just HAVE to expect controversy. And that's PROBABLY why it was approved to be on the screen - since there's four pages here discussing the intricacies of the meaning of "baby mama" vs. "baby's mama" vs. "baby daddy". That's probably a first. But I will say this: for those of you giving us the definitions of "baby mama" vs. "baby daddy", I really have to wonder how many of you are black, or spend time with black people in enough of a social environment where you converse on a personal level. My group of friends is extemely diverse, across lines from white to hispanic to black - and it's my experience that "baby mama" is no more offensive than "baby daddy", despite what's been said here. I've heard "baby mama" said about a man's wife by the man himself playin' around just like I've heard the reverse. From blacks to blacks, this is absolutely a non-issue. However - I think what happened here, other than being from a news organization that should be above using "slang" trying to be funny (and failing) - is another variation of the "N-word" phenomenon, where a black man can call another black man that word and be fine with it, but there is no circumstance where it's okay for a white man to say that word. Let me be clear. There IS no circumstance where it's okay to say it, but I think it's a cultural phenomenon. And what you see in that video, other than a news organization doing it which is bad enough - is some non-blacks using a decidedly black culture term to describe a black candidate for president's wife. They're obviously highlighting their blackness. If you can't see that - I don't know what to tell you. Bad taste, bad form all around. Just don't do it.
Yet... had they just said "wife" then we'd hear about it's disrespectful to not call her by her name... Who dat is? The world needs to lighten up.... a bit... if she called herself by similar term, then you'll have to let a knucklehead graphics typer-guy at the network off the hook for his white nerdiness blunder.
Forget about the race thing - is anyone just outraged and depressed that this is "news"? I know it's Fox News...but come on. Does anyone have any journalistic integrity anymore?
I would be willing to bet if they just said "wife" we would not have heard anything about it being disrespectful. And you are absolutely wrong. She didn't call herself by that name, and her using self deprecating humor does not give a cable news network to free license to broadcast that to millions of viewers. His white nerdiness blunder only happened because Michelle Obama was black. That's the point. He would not have made the same blunder on McCain's wife.
