Bottom line: It doesn't matter what Michelle Obama joked about referencing her husband. Fox News would never use that term to talk about McCain's wife. It was definitely racist. Because of the race involved here, they felt they could make that little joke, and it wouldn't matter. I notice things on a more subtle scale all the time. commentators will often pat a black guest on the back or shoulder in a more familiar way that they wouldn't do to a white guest. It isn't malicious, but this stuff does happen.
I'm still struggling to think of a context -- other then a drunk frat house -- where this would be funny?
There are some ignorant people in the world, but IMHO, I don't think its racist...that term is used loosely in today's society...
It is racist inasmuch as they would not have used the term if Michelle was white. You could argue the level of racism, but the term is what the term is. It would be great if Obama hammered them for this and got an apology.
I'm not saying they were alluding to that at all. FWIW, Michelle Malkin's blog comments on the situation. She says she had nothing to do with the tagline and isn't sure what the meaning behind it was. She also says that Michelle Obama uses the term "baby daddy" on the stump when referring to her husband. (That time it is a quote from her website ) I'm not sure whether she is getting some sorry second hand information here or not. http://michellemalkin.com/2008/06/11/were-going-to-hell/ http://www.topix.com/forum/who/john-mccain/T7LB6J3V5OBI23086/p3#c51 By the way, first time I've checked out her blog before. She gets some nasty hate mail.
So was it racist when Michelle Obama said it herself? wow, talk about manufacturing a controversy here... just ridiculous... when Michelle Obama says it, she's 'hip' and 'appealing to young voters'... when Fox flashes it on the screen, they are racists... riiiiiiiiight, that's fair
Not so sure about that...baby mama drama occurs in all races...should it be used for a potential first lady, not in my book, but racist, IMHO, that's a stretch...
Will Fox be referring to McCain's white wife as a baby momma in a tag line? They won't. The only person they felt comfortable doing that to was the black one.
Can't say you are right or wrong. No interest in browsing her blog and reading the rest of it, just found that article in a google search.
Feel free to correct the predominant opinion that Fox would not have done this if she were white. Or prove otherwise by finding a similar Fox news tag referring to a white woman. Until then, it's racist. I don't think this is a big deal, especially since it's coming from the bastion of all things assinine - but the term racist applies here. If they had a picture of McCain up there with the tag "conservatives: Leave my honky's age out of this" it would be racist too.
Um... did Cindy McCain use the phrase? Nope. Did Michelle Obama? Yep. That's why there is a difference. man, this is such a phony controversy...
Racebaiter_Jorge doesn't see anything wrong with Fox News labeling Michelle Obama as an unwed mother. Shocking! I have no doubt he would stand silent if Olberman called Cindy McCain a "homewrecker", "thief" or "junkie". Of course, the difference in the two situations is that there is a factual basis to apply those labels to Cindy McCain.
Next time fox news should just use the N word, cuz black people use it all the time, right? that makes it okay for them to be unprofessional.
lol. it's funny how you change your arguement. first you say it's celebrating their diversity...now you say since Michelle Obama said it, it's okay. which one is it?
no doubt, that is a fine example of hypocrisy That's the problem with perceived racism, only blacks can say it but when a white says it, it is hate/racist...uh no, that is more or less the 'hip hop' influence on our society. People are too sensitive about this kind of crap.
They used the term because of her race. The decision to use that term was based on Obama's race, and that makes it a concern. If hip hop influence caused FOX to refer to McCain's wife as a baby moma then that's fine, but when they only apply to one person based on their race then it is a problem, and doesn't have to do with people being too sensitive.
