    DETROIT -- Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been
    fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at
    colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3
    of the American League championship series.

    The network confirmed Saturday that Lyons was dismissed after
    Friday's comments. He has been replaced for the remainder of the
    series by Los Angeles Angels announcer Jose Mota.

    "Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for
    making comments on air that the company found inappropriate,"
    network spokesman Dan Bell said.

    Lyons had been working in the booth for the ALCS alongside Thom
    Brennaman and Piniella.

    Piniella, approached before Saturday's Game 4, declined to
    comment on the situation except to say: "No, he's not here
    today."

    In the second inning of Friday's game between Detroit and Oakland, Piniella talked about the success light-hitting A's infielder Marco Scutaro had in the first round of the playoffs. Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week.

    Later, Piniella said the A's needed Thomas to get "en fuego" -- hot in Spanish -- because he was currently "frio" -- or cold. After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up.

    Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet."

    "I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued.

    Make me the fourth one not to get it. Maybe Swoly will see this thread and comment on what Lyons said.

    uhhh. yea...

    Maybe Lyons was fired for being unfunny... then again, Pinellia's "joke" was worse.

    On second read, it was probably this comment: "I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," that probably got Pinella steamed, which resulted in Fox execs actually examining the transcript.

    What does it matter... Lyons was never that good, and Pinella is leaving to manage the hapless cubs (who he'll probably quit on some point in 2008).

    I think the reason he got fired is that his remarks could be interpreted as suggesting that Latino guys steal wallets.

    So far this postseason, Lyons - a guy whose only claim to fame is dropping trou on television - has:

    1. Mocked a sight-impaired fan;
    2. Mocked Pinella for taking the Tampa job, which he took to be near his dying father;
    3. Mocked Pinella for being bilingual.

    Douchebag, terrible announcer, and general all-around dumbass. Buh-bye, Lyons, shoulda happened years ago. Can you take Buck & McCarver with you?

    This is off topic, but whats up with Fox's rader gun. They have all these pitches recorded as 98 mph from pitcher who don't throw that hard. I remeber Nate Robertson, who's fastball is usually 91 mph, was throwing 97 mph fastball according to Fox.

    Wow, some of you guys are pretty dense. How do you not understand the joke? It definately was insensitive, but I think its silly to fire people over comments like this. A warning should be enough and if he does it again then suspend him or something.

    Lyons was a good broadcaster. That he got fired for that is completely ridiculous and political correctness run amok.

    Shame on Fox. I didn't think it was possible for me to dislike their broadcast any more than I did. But I do now.
