I just skimmed through this but has nobody pointed out the obvious? They should have drafted VY. If this season is like last they won't be broadcast in Austin either later in the season.. They better start winning or the honeymoon is going to be over soon.
Yes, clearly the problem for the Texans is the quarterback with the highest QB rating in the AFC and the second highest in the NFL. Look at the posts in this thread instead of skimming through it. Show us some evidence as to why the Texans need Young's marketability. It'd be one thing if they were the Saints and only having 75 percent of tickets sold. That's not the case. Every season the stadium has averaged above capacity. You can't just make this simplistic argument of "VY or Bush would bring more fans" and expect it to hold up. For that to matter, you need to show that the Texans have a problem with revenue. We're still waiting.
Did someone say "revenue"? According to Forbes, Texans revenue has increased 15% between 2003 and 2006. Right now, the team is #4 in the NFL in revenue ($222 million) and #2 in operating income ($57.6 million). The valuation of the team increased 10% last year and is now worth over a billion dollars (good for #4 in the league). In fact, the team has gained 24% in value since its inception, despite having terrible records pretty much every year. Bush? Mario? Vince? Simply irrelevant.
Put your claws back in cat. I'm just rehashing what the talking heads on TV were saying. Intriguing and getting top coverage are to different things. And if you think the Jags have been covered like the Packers, Steelers, or Giants, then you are disillusioned.
Everything. After this past CBA McNair even has to give some of the $$$ from naming rights and parking.
I understand that. But give it a month - time for the initial Reggie hype and the romance of the Saints returning to New Orleans to die down - and the Saints won't be very hyped either. See, the whole marketing angle is overblown. Yes, we would've had a lot of focus... for a month. Then the novelty is gone and whether that attention stays depends on whether we win or lose. Now, yes, at this point I am concerned about whether Mario was the best choice for us to win football games. But that's where the debate needs to be... on the field production.
Again, it's not a very big deal as long as those seats are sold. 20,000 unsold tickets is a huge financial problem. 20,000 no shows is a minor financial inconvienence. The bottom line is, those tickets for those games last year were sold, and that's what the Texans are primarily concerned with.
Thats fine. The unsold revenue of concessions and merchandise can add up. Pretty soon those tickets will not be sold. If they continue to make bad choices and provide a terrible product on the field
You've already been told in this thread repeatedly that marchandise sales are irrelevant. I'm not sure why you seem so intent on bringing that out. Also, for a team worth hundreds of millions of dollars with the third highest revenue stream in the league, losing an average of $3.50 a person on concessions for a couple of games for a few thousand no-shows isn't exactly a financially crippling thing. Anyway, I do agree with your last statement. If they don't provide a quality product, at some point that fan support will wane. But it hasn't yet, and they weren't or aren't in a position where they need Bush or Young to boost sales. Sales are fine. What they need now, more than any gimmick, is to win football games. Maybe drafting Bush or Young instead of Williams would do more in that area. I'm not sure. But that's the debate we should be having - about what's going on on the field. This talk about drafting Bush or VY for ratings purposes is just silly.
I can see where you're coming from, but really, football is so popular in Texas that if someone cancels their Texans season tickets, someone else is waiting in line just to take that person's spot. (There is a waiting list, after all.) When you're #4 in revenue in the entire league and #2 in operating income (which is technically more important to McNair), the situation isn't even remotely close to problematic, let alone dire. EDIT: Bah. The Cat beat me, sort of.
Bob McNair says, "it's shame for San Antonio and south Texas" cause there are Texan fans there? Don't believe it. San Antonio and south Texas is allll Cowboys Country. Heck the entire state is. It's like the Texas Rangers. Most of their fans are in Arlington. If spot one outside the area, you kinda raise your eyebrow. Texans fans are the same way. If you spot one outside Houston, especially in San Antonio, you do a double take.
Star names and players are always a draw. I don't think it is at all unreasonable to believe that. However, as has been said, the Texans aren't necessarily hurting revenue wise. Yet. If the losing continues, then of course, that is going to change. So Bush or Young or Mario or whoever might not have impacted revenue this year. How it plays out in the future is anyone's guess. Now, media attention and the general spotlight...well, that's a different story...
I am still not buying this merchandise thing. The texans would have to be rewarded for selling a shirt or hat. How was the rockets pick of Yao Ming a good financial decision? Not to even mention the amount of coverage the texans would get nationally. There would have been so many off the field benefits in taking a Bush or Young.
Wow, I guess you're not much of a Texans fan are you? Good or bad, happy or sad you should support your team. A REAL fan sticks regardless because when the one glimmer of glory, the Playoffs come the air smells so much sweeter.
Oh yes, we've only heard this for the past 6 months. Let me ask you something, what would it really matter if we wouldnt be winning? Because, potentially our defense wouldnt stop anyone. So how long would Texan fans but up with a defense that was easier to penetrate than back alley sally? Yes, I know. Laugh it up we're still dead last in D, but perish the thought we could be worse. The Philly game we almost pretended to competitive. Anyway, the Texans still need upgraded talent all around. Especially the OL, which should have been already solidified before we even drafted a stud QB. Yes, that was the front office's first mistake and it was inexcusable! Look at New England, Pittsburgh, etc. The reason why Big Ben and Tommy have thrived is they both have a "wall of granite" for a pocket. It's easy to develop and grow one's confidence when you aren't pulling DE's from your ass every other play. Like I have said before, I will give the Texans to midseason before I start chirping for this or that to happen. Bottom line, easiest way to win is game plan so your D starts stopping people so you theoretically dont have to score as much and greatly increase your chances of victory. That's how Baltimore won a Super Bowl and might win another one. VY cant play defense. Bush cant play defense. Enough said.
first of all, VY and BUSh aren't even the best qb/rb from the draft...The best qb is Jay Cutler and the best rb is that dude on the patriots .....with this crappy OL EVERY fan/news outlet/espn would be b****ing how the Texans are wasting VY or Bush's talents with this crappy OL....so its mute point...even IF the texans got VY or BUsh there would STILL be b****ing or perhaps even MORE than there already is....they would still be 0-2 and everyone would be saying "should have drafted so and so"...it will never end....if we took VY then everyone wants Bush...if we took Bush (with his amazing 6 yrds rushing last week) everyone would be wanting VY.... Ironically, niether of these two will end up being the best...its Cutler and Marone or whatever....okay carry on !!!!
Bottom line on this thread is easy. For the Texans to get recognition; respect they must win. They must do something. Starting with the Skins would accidentally raise some eyebrows. Beat the Cowboys again and then people will REALLY talk.
