If we'd resigned Carlos, I think Clemens would have come back cheaper. But I'm just glad he'll be back. We need his arm!
i know..i know...and there is no doubt that pitching wins ballgames....and i agree that we, as long as Backe keeps on keepin on, have one of the if not the best rotation in the NL....but I'm worried about the bats.
Burnitz is a guy who's name starts with a B, and he plays CF ok. I'm shocked we didn't sign him. I'm sure they have some plan for that position, they have to.
I'm not a huge fan but he IS an RBI guy...and he would give Berkman/Bags a little protection...especially against righties Now that Soriano has signed, do you think that deal is dead? I mean, we could still trade for him and extend him if we wanted right?
Sure, but I'm thinking that window's passed. Evidently the Stros didn't like the Rangers' asking price. And that really wouldn't provide us an OF, unless we moved Biggio back to CF or put Lane there. I don't think either has much range, and Big's limp noodle arm would be even more exposed there. I think they still gotta pick up a FA, or trade for one. Is Cruz Jr. still a possibility?
It's good PR...Is he worth it, Absolutely...Will he make the difference...Absolutely NOT...We need bats and with all that money going to Roger, we won't be able to get the extra bat we need...Period...
Just heard on 610 that reportedly a press conference is scheduled for this afternoon to announce Clemens has signed.
Think of it this way...Assuming that the Rocket is getting $18 million for this season, that means the Astros will have paid him an average of $11.5 million for 2 seasons, at least one of which had him winning the Cy Young and helping the Astros to 1 game away from the World Series. That's not a bad deal. I'm sure that a lot of the $18 million for this season will be deferred anyway.
i just heard the guys on 610 say that Roger still hasn't cashed all his checks from the Blue Jays! deferred money, baby!
In the 90s, I worked in IT at a bank Roger did most of business. One of the tasks was building a Data Warehouse for them. We use to use Roger's accounts to "test" our system. The money this man went through was amazing. One account was a no interest checking account with $247,000 in auto deposits coming in every 2 weeks. Most of his bills were auto deducted like his average $5k electric bill. But what hit me was he'd get $10K cash out every week or so - pocket money I guess. Once this account would hit a mill, he'd clear it out and move it somewhere else.
Even with Clemens, we were only a mild threat for the playoffs last season. It wasn't until Beltran became part of the team the we would be considered World Series contenders. This current play appears to be nothing more than a desperate owner with his back against the wall making a PR move to appease the fans after a terrible offseason in which we lost our top RBI man, and arguably one of the top five position players in the game. Both of which happened to be the major contributors to the best postseason run in team history. Let alone, the fear they put into the opposing pitcher and fans; or the swagger they gave to our lineup; or the utter confidence they gave the fans that helped create a heightened hysteria that Houston has rarely seen.
Yup, very surprising that someone could use this as a reason to bash our owner. Color me shocked. BTW, Beltran was really kickass in September last year. Had it not been for his 8 RBIs, we may not have won the Wild Card.
