This line of thinking is completely counter-productive and self-injurious to Wafer and his agent. The Rockets are the only team that could sign Wafer to a one-year league minimum contract and would have Early Bird rights on him for next summer, which would enable Von to re-sign for up to the full MLE amount without regard to the salary cap. Hell, Devean George torpedoed the first iteration of the Jason Kidd trade just because he was afraid of losing those Early Bird rights. Von and his agent need to get some freakin' perspective before they make stupid comments like this to their own detriment.
Can Von not hit an open shot? Compared to who? Tracy McGrady (career): FG - 44% 3pt - 34% Ron Artest: FG - 40% 3pt - 39% Shane Battier: FG - 41% 3pt - 38% Aaron Brooks: FG - 40% 3pt - 37% Brent Barry: FG - 40% 3pt - 37% Rafer Alston: FG - 37% 3pt - 35% Von Wafer: FG - 45% 3pt - 39% Wafer was the best shooter on the team last season. Do not tell me he always took ill--advised, he was the best shooter on the team, he needed to take shots.
I think his agent is a little flustered because Von isn't going to get much more than the minimum for other teams... his best chance at a decent contract would have been their Rockets because they desperately needed his athleticism and scoring punch off the bench last season. Now with Yao out and the team looking to get younger, he just won't be as effective. However I don't have any problem with his attitude. A lot of people pin being passionate as being selfish but you can tell he truly loves to play and believes he can help his team win. Can't hate on him for that.
It's true that when open, he would normally make the shot. However, when he would try to create his own shot, he would usually end up taking ill-advised shots.
Actually, he didn't. If he makes the majority of his wide open looks and he shoots less than 50% from the field, it stands to reason that he misses most of his ill-advised shots. The only player who took worse shots than Wafer was Artest, and surprisingly, Artest was a much better ball handler than Wafer.
I love Wafer, not only his name. I'd sign him in a minute. Instant offense off the bench and he's young. He gave the Rocket's everything thing he had!!!!
I guess my standards are higher than yours. IMO, Wafer can only attack the basket when the defense rotates poorly. He cannot take his man off the dribble.
I don't think Ariza derserves Ariza's contract much less Von. He's a good player, but 2-3 mill is the max he's worth and it doesn't appear that any gm thinks he's worth that yet.
As far as I understand, Budinger is a forward not a guard, and both Bud and Taylor have not proven themselves yet in the NBA. Von is a very efficient scorer, his energy and passion are infectious, and mixed together were in some ways game changing... If Coach A wants him back then so do I...
That's actually a very poor argument. That's like saying one of McGrady's attributes is his ability to occasionally hit a pull-up 3 from 28 feet. After all, I'm sure he makes those at a higher percentage than anyone else on the Rockets. Wafer's best asset is his 3 pt shot. His ball-handling, decision making, and defense are all subpar. There's no need to overpay him.
Brooks can take it to the basket and beat people off the dribble and hit the three pointer better than wafer.
