Calvin preached basketball fundamentals and knowledge through the games, ive learned a great deal of basketball thanks to CM. He would know the next play before it happend, he knew the game well and had the humour and character to form one of the best commentators the rockets had or may ever will have, there's no replacement for CM. But anything will be better than Cooper
None of those folks can carry a candle for Mr Murphy. How unfortunate. This evil that took him away from our TV sets could have happened to someone else say Sean Elliot or the other Bald headed white guy on ESPN basketball games. Oh well no one can probably be as funny and endearing as our beloved Calvin. But I think I will prefer Coach Van Chancellor over the other guys. If we could land Jim Deshayes I can live with that too
The significant difference here is that he is facing charges of sexual abuse by his daughters. I sincerely hope that he is exhonerrated, but that is something that would be hanging over the team all season. The one thing you don't want is your broadcaster to be a distraction. I love Calvin. He is the reason I started watching basketball. I used to carry his basketball card around in my back pocket every day as a kid. I wish him absolutely nothing but the best. But, I completely get why this is happening and why the Rockets and Calvin both need to make a decision. This is a very serious issue that could cost Calvin his freedom. He needs to dedicate his time to clearing his name and then see what happens.
To my fellow 610 listeners ... can you imagine Van Chancellor for 82 games? Just think this ... Bill: "Yao with the soft layup for 2." VC:"Oh mayan (slurp), the big fella needs to take lessons from my grandson lil Nikko (slurp), you know he comes out there to the backyard (slurp), and shoots on the breakaway goal. Boy, I'll tell ya (slurp), nice play."
Hmm...I seem to have wandered onto the Ofiicial Calvin Murphy Memorial thread. My mistake...although the Calvin love-fest that's taking place here doesn't change things a bit for me. I, too, want to be entertained. In fact, that's exactly the reason why I watch. We agree on that. I guess the conclusion that we can draw is that we are entertained by different things. My 16 year-old cousin genuinely wants the Rockets to win, too. When he watches the games, he gets loud and excitable, he yells and points and he acts like he's actually part of the game. When they win, it makes his week and when they lose, well, there's no joy in Mudville. That doesn't mean that any of us want him on the Rockets broadcasts, though. CM, in my estimation, was basicly how I described my little cousin. He is passionate about the Rockets and his job...he was loud and excitable and his voice reached ear-splitting levels when he got worked up. That's about all I'd get out of his contributions to the broadcasts. Nobody needs to be reminded that being a Hall of Fame player hardly makes somebody a Hall of Fame annoucer. Calvin is an example of that. Lastly, I'm actually a real Rockets fan and most certainly NOT a fan of Calvin Murphy (the announcer...was a huge fan of the player)...according to some of you, that makes me a study in contradictions! I can live with that.
Me too, like crazy. I hate to see Calvin go out like this. As a kid, he was my favorite Rocket of all time, but he made me crazy as a commentator. The cookies, the singing, the stupid getups, the cult of personality... What did any of that have to do with the games? How many times did the camera stay on him and his antics while I missed a play? Air a special about how he loves cookies and leave it out of the broadcast -- I'm trying to watch the game! I'll miss Calvin as a member of the Rockets family. I will NOT miss him on the mike. I thought he was awful. As for the other options, I'd take Bull first and Van Chancellor last. Coop second to last. It's a big city. If they won't hire Bullard, is the WNBA the only place we can go for backups? Cooper's an unmitigated disaster and Van Chancellor's about the only guy with the potential to be worse than Calvin at what Calvin was bad at. "Don't blame me, I voted for Bullard."
What a bummer. I really liked Calvin and Bill, and can't stand the idea of listening to Van Chankersore in Murph's place. I agree - get Bullard. I don't think he's good, but he's nowhere near as annoying as Cynthia Pooper and Van Cancerteste.
Darn. Kinda sucks for Calvin, especially if he really is found to be innocent once all of this is over. Hopefully it's just a rumor that they are considering Van to take over. I think the Rockets should just rule out anyone that has played or coached for the Comets, and go from there.
Fox 26 reported last night that Murph will not be the Rockets color commentator this year.this year . They will wait until the trial is over, and if Murph is found innocent, he and the Rockets will discuss his return. As far as his replacement for this year, I wouldn't mind Bill going solo. Everyone else is just annoying. Mike (lisp) Newlin Cynthia (studdering) Cooper Van (hick) Chancelor Matt (Air boring) Bullard Maybe the rockets should think about asking Clyde Drexler to fill in as a temp this year. I think He could do a good job or maybe some other Ex-Rocket. Anyway I think Calvin will be back after this year.
Calvin -- we'll welcome you back. I hope the opportunity presents itself. Interim choices? Bull and Van are worth considering. Coop, Newlin, Clyde no.
If the charges are true obviously I don't want him as announcer and hope he pays the price... If the charges aren't true, his daughter pretty much ruined his life. Good luck to both of them, and if the charges aren't true.. I hpoe somehow down the road they are able to have a relationship again...
Last year (or the year before?) when Van Chancellor filled in people here were saying he did a good job and enjoyed his commentary. At least I think people were saying that. Maybe someone can find a link to that thread. I found Bull to be kind of boring. That could be because I was use to Murphy. and yes I have considered the fact that he may have done it just like I considered the fact that he may not have. I don't know.
I think Van's a fine choice. Bull would have been good too. For those who don't like Van, what's wrong with him? The only complaint I've seen fleshed out is his strong accent. I don't see how Texans should complain about a strong regional accent, I see it as a badge. Have you got anything else on him?
Is Eddie Johnson a commentator somewhere? I think he would be pretty good if he doesn't already have a job. It is too bad Kenny Smith already has that gig on TNT. He would be a good replacement for Murphy.
I'm with you on this one. I can't stand his voice, when he comes on 610 on the radio for interviews or commercials I ALWAYS change the station. One time I heard a part of one and it was jammed in my head forever. "Come to Sudie's Ketfish (obviously supposed to be Catfish) blah blah blah." Pugs
