Mario is going to get booed, Carr is going to get booed, the entire team will get booed.

I'm soooo mad that I already payed for season tickets.

This is a real shocker. On the one hand you have to credit the Texans for having the balls to make this pick. Bush was the safest pick. It's not that Williams if some guy who only had great combine numbers, though. He produced in college and it a freakish athelete at a position of need. A dominant defensive end is a much, much bigger priority for the Texans than a dominant running back, especially since they are moving to a 4-3. You could tell Casserly had a boner for him in his recent interviews. I wonder if all of these problems with Bush and the house for his family might have been what pushed McNair to sign Williams. I wish they would have been able to pick up Williams in a trade down so he won't have such enormous pressure on him.

I heard something about Bush being blackmailed by some agent who threatened to release some info about his family if he didn't sign with him. Is this connected? Is this something different than the house his parents were living in?

One thing to consider here - the NFL is all about salary cap management, whether it should be or not. The teams that are the best simply don't tie up tons of money into one player. You can't do it and win - it will leave holes in your team. Who is the Steelers' highest paid player? Do they even have any top-5 picks? Same with the Patroits, before they gave Brady a big deal (and thus released a lot of other talent and got worse this year).

In the NFL, unlike the NBA, they key to winning is to have good players everywhere, rather than the "best in the league" guy unless you get him cheap. That said, I think the smartest move would have been to trade down to 4-6 to save money and stock up on picks and pick someone like AJ Hawk or Ferguson. But I'm thrilled that we're not committing a ridiculous amount of money to a relatively low pay position like running back. It would have been a huge setback for the franchise, I think.

It's funny you say that. I thought that very thing a couple hours ago before I even saw the board. :)

I'm gonna get run out of here by the people with torches.

But ya know...a running back isn't gonna do more than 300 more yards of the course of a season than DD if he stays healthy.

A single pass rushing monster can change a defense.

I am too stunned to even analyze this....I figured all the Williams talk was a smokescreen.

Didn't we draft a DE in the 1st round last year. That didn't work out. I hated everybody on the Texans anyway except Mathis, Andre, and Robinson, so the transition to not like them will be real easy anyway.

Defensive end is a higher paid position than running back in a general sense. And we really don't know at this point what they were willing to give Bush or what Bush's camp was demanding.

I really don't mind that we are not getting Bush. My main problem is that we are wasting the #1 overall pick by signing someone the day before the draft. I wish they would at least wait until draft day and see what another team is willing to give up to get that pick, and then we could get Williams or someone with just as much potential with a later pick.

If no good deal comes around, then agree to the deal and take Williams. We didn't even see what deal might come down the pipes in the last minutes. Not a great move IMO.
