All expansion teams draft QB's first. No choice there.

And they screw up. I guess you can't blame Carolina as Kerry Collins did have some success there. Tim Couch was of course a bust in Cleveland. Jacksonville had the right idea with Tony Boselli, I guess they had traded for Mark Brunell beforehand. I guess we thought since we had Boselli...

The top tackle in the 01 draft was Mike Williams (bust) from UT, w/Bryant McKinnie ranked after, though the best OT from that draft is Levi Jones (who the Bengals were ridiculed by Kiper, et al for selecting where they did).

Richard Justice is a complete and utter ****tard. Today on Jim Rome's tv show, he said he felt sorry for Mario Williams because he had to deal with the boos, the people freaking out on talk radio and the stories in the newspapers deriding the pick.

Hey, dip****, you wrote one of those articles. That idiot never ceases to amaze me.

He complained about the pick first, then went on to say he felt sorry for Super Mario for having to go through all that. I give 10 days until the editorial by Richard Justice hailing the pick.

by the way...i still don't know what happened:

    1. if you listen to mcnair speak, signability was a question with Bush;

    2. if you listen to casserly, it wasn't and it was a strict football question only.

Casserly actually talks plenty about the "worth" of Reggie Bush (who they all believe is still the "part-time" player he was at USC), and how that would have affected the contract they were really willing to give him versus the one he may have wanted, or the one that Mario did get.

If they looked at Bush and calculated how much he was worth based on the amount of plays he actually was going to be in for this offense... versus the number of plays Mario Williams was going to impact... is that a football decision, or a signability decision (since Bush was going to reject the contract that they thought he was worth, given that analysis)?

I guess I should have posted this link in this thread, not as it's own, I think it will the definitive look at what went down.

    http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=88233

In his Wednesday meeting with Kubiak, Casserly simply asks, "Who do you want to take? It's time." Kubiak replies quickly: "Let's go with Williams." Casserly agrees. They are not oblivious to the potential repercussions of their choice. They know it will likely be an unpopular pick in a draft dominated by a group of fablelike players in Bush, Young and USC quarterback Matt Leinart. Fans have watched these stars for years; choosing any one of them seems a no-brainer. "I am not running an Internet poll here," Casserly says privately.

At 7:30 the next morning, Kubiak and Casserly talk on the phone with McNair, who already is in New York for the draft. McNair asks each his opinion. "Williams," both say. He gives his approval. "Let's get him signed," McNair tells them.

thanks for breaking it down for me that way. makes much more sense. interesting.

you guys know i was screaming "part time player" for a while. but i heard some compelling arguments against that here. apparently those concerns were REAL.

The reason we drafted Mario is Kubiak wanted him badly.

I have a question. I am not going to grade the draft, I feel players need to be watched and see how they develop in the NFL before actually saying you picked the wrong guy.

    But my question:

If Mario Williams comes in and produces, let's say he ends up with stats like

    69 tackles 9.5 sacks 3 forced fumbles 1 fumble recovery 1 interception

    or something comparable.

Now let's say Reggie Bush comes in and produces and end up with stats like

356 carries 1302 yards rushing 44 receptions 344 yards receiving

    or something comparable.

Now lets' say both the Saints and Texans have losing records or winning records or one team succeeds and the other fails. Even though both players produced, are they still good picks?

    That is an interesting question.

One way of looking at it is this - do we have anyone who can give us those "projected" Williams stats based on last season's production?

On the other hand, will DD be able to reproduce those "projected" stats? Dorminick has garnered over a thousand yards each of the last 3 season so reaching 1300-1400 will not be a problem for him if he plays at least 14 games this season with an improved line and "projected" better coaching system.

Based on that, Mario looks more valuable.
