Are you guys sure this report wasnt just repeating what everybody was saying about one and a half weeks ago before Damon shot them down???
You guys do realize that, according to the new CBA, if we use the LLE this year, we don't get it again next year, right? Therefore, I think we need to be shrewd and not just sign anyone to the LLE. I understand we can't be too picky with only $1.6 million to spend, but I'd rather hold that money for next year than sign Charlie Ward 2: Electric Boogaloo. And Yonkers... touché... and go see Fight Club.
As with many other roster moves, including the Rice acquisition years ago, we are in full agreement, Thanos.
GP would know his role, or just get traded half way through the season again. with the way JVG runs our team, there isn't much room for cancers in the locker room. Look what happened to how our team got butchered last year. GP is tough, yes old I know, but we all can agree he's got prolly one or two more seasons left in his tank. His defense is pretty tight and with JVG possibly refining his defense even more, he'll be sharper then how he was 2 years ago. Lets not forget that he does pass alot and has a better assist/turnover ratio than mighty mouse. I'd say sign GP for the LLE, he's taken pay cuts before and is still chasing that elusive ring. I'd figure he'd do it again, this time with a team with less egos then malone, shaq and kobe.
You got the point. We need someone different as the present guards. But anyway, he must be fast enough to do the defense since yao is slow.
As if Gary Payton, an All-Star for years and former Dream-Teamer, wouldn't be able to teach our number one draft choice this year, Luther Head, some tricks of the trade of being point guard. I'd love to have Jay Williams too, but to put him ahead of Gary Payton? Nah. I'd sign Gary Payton to teach point guard mechanics (He was a stellar mentor in Boston, ask anybody) then trade Mike James if I knew full-well I could sign Jason Williams in lieu of him.
I believe it's until we have 15 players signed. Free agents remain free agents until they sign with a team, so as long as we've got a spot on the roster we can sign them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
man... this guy is just at the point in his career where he wants to cash a paycheck ! (enjoy spending the last productive years of your career, getting 18 mins a night!) http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/news/release-050805-stoudamire_signed.html Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced today the team has signed free agent guard Damon Stoudamire to a four-year contract. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not released. Stoudamire, a 10-year NBA veteran, joins the Grizzlies after playing in Portland for the past eight seasons. In 2004-05 he produced his best season as a member of the Blazers with highs in points (15.8 ppg), field goals made (457), three-point field goals made (181) and free-throw percentage (91.5%) while averaging a team-high 5.7 assists in 81 games played. He ranked fourth among NBA league leaders in free-throw percentage and tied with Paul Pierce for fifth in triple-doubles with two. “I’m excited about becoming a part of the Grizzlies and the Memphis family,” said Damon. “I know all of the Grizzlies fans are looking for that first playoff win, and I look forward to not only getting that win, but reaching the ultimate goal and winning a championship for Memphis.” The 5-10, 171-pound guard, finished his career in Portland ranking second behind Terry Porter on the Trail Blazers’ all-time three-pointers made list (717), second all-time in three-point attempts (1,998) and third all-time in assists (3,018). In eight seasons with the Blazers, he averaged 12.8 points, 5.7 assists and 33.1 minutes in 529 games played. “Damon is an experienced veteran and proven leader on the court,” said West. “We feel we have added a significant player to our team and know that he will help take us to a different level than where we are today.” Stoudamire holds career averages of 14.6 points, 6.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 729 career games with Portland and Toronto. Drafted by Toronto in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft, he was named the 1996 Schick Rookie of the Year in addition to being the only unanimous selection to the Schick All-Rookie First Team. He played 200 games with the Toronto Raptors before being traded to Portland 49 games into the 1997-98 season. Stoudamire owns career playoff averages of 11.3 points, 5.0 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 46 NBA playoff appearances.
Van Exel was fine on Dallas. In fact, Nick has always been fine as long as he was the starter and given a specific role.
I'm sorry, what has Jay Williams proven in this league? Even when healthy he didn't do anything. People talk about Van Exel being damaged goods what the heck is Jay Will? Jay Will also isn't a good passer and wasn't a true PG, even at Duke.
Exactly. Van Exel is probably thanking Stoudamire as we speaking for giving up a chance at championship run for a paycheck.
