I wouldn't mind Sam as coach. He's a local boy and attended college where I currently work (in fact his old head coach still coaches here--I wonder if he'd ask him to be an assistant if he got hired?).
C'mon people! This is Sam! Where's the excitement? Where's the zealotry? Where's the glorious nostalgia of 1990s triumph? This idea has me so pumped. If I had gobs of money I would take out a full-page ad in the chronicle saying "WE WANT SAM." I still consider it a damn shame that we never signed Cassell to the veteran's minimum toward the end of his career. Would have been great to see him retire as a Rocket. This is a way to bring it full circle, to make things right. Cassell is a hero. (And as others have said, he's been known as a High IQ player for years, he's charismatic, he'll have the instant respect of his players, and he has balls the size of microwaves.) Sam was never the best Rocket (Dream) or the toughest Rocket (Maxwell/Thorpe) or the nicest Rocket (Clyde) or even the most colorful Rocket (Barkley), but hell, he was the brightest Rocket, if that makes any sense. Whenever I think of Cassell, I kinda smile a little bit. He's probably the only player that has that effect. This would be awesome. Please. Let it happen.
Bonus? If Cassell ever missed a game due to illness, we could just hire Andy Serkis and Industrial Light and Magic to CGI him in.

Here is a guy that wasn't fast, couldn't dunk, didn't have great court vision, but somehow always leads his teams to wins and even got himself an all-star appearance in the process. He has also had no problems telling superstar players such as KG, Allen, Robinson, Sprewell and Brand what to do. He also had no problems standing up to Dream. This guys is a leader. There is no mistaking that.
I really like this idea. Sam was a very good player. He really knew how to take advantage of his size and basketball smarts. If he can figure out how to translate that to other players while he sits on the bench, he could be great. My other pick is Jeff Van Gundy.
I would never want any Rocket legend like Sam or Elie to be a guy like Morey's b****. That's why I can't support them being hired to coach this team.

Cassell has been an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards the past two seasons. He played 15 years in the NBA and won three championships, two with the Rockets (1994 and 1995) and one with the Boston Celtics (2008).
