a good backup center? I rather have Deke play for 5 more years than to have Ewing as our backup Center.

You gotta feel bad for the guy.

To his grave and beyond, it's no longer possible he'll ever be known as anything more than "that guy who got dunked on."

It's like Shawn Bradley, times a million...

I guarantee you this move has NO implication on whether or not Landry will be gone or not.

These people with all these assumptions just make the board so watered down and ignorant.

i wonder if the sarcasm meter is working today. :p

i think it may actually mean the opposite.. they are trying to clear room for Landry either with cash saved or freed up roster spots maybe?

seems right, i'd think strawberry has a good chance but chances are they'll keep harris. it really won't matter cause neither will get any burn.

According to ESPN.com, Mike Harris's salary is not guaranteed at all. My guess is that he has some partial guarantee kick in at some point, but it might be after the start of the regular season.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=2008FreeAgents

Strawberry's partial guarantee ($200k) kicks in only if he is not waived by October 31. This may technically mean that he could play in the first regular season game and then get cut without any guarantee.

c.50K was the training camp deal Harris got last season. I'm guessing it could be the same this time around.

I knew about the ESPN article but thought Feigen could have better sources re: the Rockets. Here's the full quote by Feigen:

Great Trade. I'm loving how Morey is so active on the market.

But couldn't we have just cut him instead? I mean what good is the Weis' guys rights? I know its probably impossible to get a pick back for Ewing Jr.

You do have to feel for him. But really, It goes beyond "getting dunked on" He was leap frogged on a world stage!! Like something out of "NBA Streets". VC's manhood got dragged from his chin all the way up his face to his forehead to the top of his head and over!! Traumatization Owned!! That dunk to me is the best dunk during gameplay ever.

This has already been dealt with in the thread.

If he's cut we have to - actually, no - go back and read what has been outlined several times already.

Remember, though, that the $50k guarantee for Mike Harris last season was for his original training camp invite deal. Later last season, the Rockets signed Harris to a two-year deal. His 2007-08 salary (which, even prorated, was more than $50k) was guaranteed, but I don't think his 2008-09 was guaranteed, at least not prior to the regular season. It would be nice to get specific clarification on this issue from the Rockets, though.

Actually, W22_Streak is technically correct. The Rockets could have still cut Patrick Ewing, Jr. by the end of this weekend and not had to pay him anything. It is only if Ewing is still on the roster next week that his partial guarantee kicks in.

Hey, the Rockets still got the draft rights to a foreign big man out of it. Who knows? Some team might see something in him and want to offer something for him later on. Or not. Who cares? It's something for nothing.

That's giving Ewing Jr WAY too much credit!

If Battier is the James Worthy of college ball, then Patrick Ewing Jr is the Jarvis Hayes of college ball.

    He sux that bad...

In his 4 year college career, the guy managed to top 20 minutes per contest only in his senior year.
And what a breakout year it was - 6.1 ppg along with a tasty 4.2 rebounds. And if you thought he couldn't pass, his 1.8 dimes (with only 1.6tos) might make you think again!
But it's not a game all about offense - defense is the name of the game for Ewing Jr - with a steal each game and 0.7 blocks - he really set the stat sheet alight!

But why perform well in college ball? All you need to do is show up at the measurements, wow them all with your 42 inch vertical, and you're sure to get selected.

When it comes to the NBA, the guy has 'fail' written all over him in permanent marker - I have no idea how we managed to ditch his contract, and thought we'd have to eat it (even though it was only 150-445k...).

The thing I find even harder to fathom is why on earth Sacramento signed him in the first place...

But I do agree - it's all about goodwill in New York. Gives the team something to parade around, and he'll be well loved for his name alone. And while he's out doing the functions, the rest of the guys can get down to playing basketball!

    Are you CERTAIN about that?

Because that's what I originally thought re: Singletary and Ewing - but the deal for Strawberry makes it look like either (i) there was a tad more to the guaranteed portion than we all thought OR (ii) we wanted a 4th string PG/SG type to come to training camp.

Either way, that's around 400k that we've saved on those 2 contracts :D

one thing I haven't seen anyone pointing out is, by trading (instead of cutting) Ewing Jr., Morey is also doing a favor to him by sending him to a team that might keep him and thus enabling him to get the garanteed money -- while at no costs to the rockets.

I imagine personal favors like this could end up helping through future negotiations when the right circumstances rises. :)
