Ewing, Jr.'s salary for next season was slated at $442,114.00. Of that amount, anywhere from $150k to $200k (this particular contract information is not available to my knowledge) would become guaranteed if he was still on the roster by the start of next week.

The Rockets still could have waived Ewing, Jr. today and not owed him anything. However, Morey was able to at least get SOMETHING for him. If Frederic Weis never plays for the Rockets, so what. However, on the off chance (however remote) that Weis improves and is worthy of a roster spot, or if another NBA team wants to trade for him, then the Rockets have at least one more potential player/trade asset.

From a cost savings standpoint, assuming that Ewing, Jr. would not have been waived today, this trade saves the Rockets at least $150k to $200k. If the Rockets end up going right to the luxury tax line, then the savings would have essentially been double (since the luxury tax is a dollar-for-dollar tax). Plus, the Rockets would have lost out on the opportunity to share in the total luxury tax revenues paid by all teams that DO go over the luxury tax. This amount, which is the REAL driver of why owners won't go even $1 over the tax, is usually several millions of dollars.

Hope this helps explain some of the luxury tax ramifications.

Ed Tapscott's lone draft as Knicks GM, what a winner.

I can't believe the guys on here that actually think Weis

    *will play
    *was a target of Morey's
*will ever play in the NBA

The guy is in his 30s, by now.

    Good job Morey.

Open up a roster spot and some cap space.

It's Morey's way of saying he feels sorry for the Knicks. Good PR move for them. Plus he'll get to play.

    Explain to me:

    1. Where in the world are you going to stash him?

It's not a Brad Newley situation where the team only owns his draft rights and can hold his rights without bringing him in camp, he's actually signed a (partially guaranteed) contract. Either you bring him in camp, and then keep him on the 15 man roster when the season starts, or you dump him.

The roster is looking pretty full and there really isn't a spot to "stash" this guy.

    2. How is he supposed to replace Battier? They are both Small Forwards but the comparison ends there. Shane is a proven NBA defender, Ewing is a decent college defender but an NBA rookie. More important, Shane shoots a decent % from the NBA 3 point line. Ewing shot 28% from the College 3 (and only fired up 1.4 3 pointers a game).

With a team that had 3point accuracy issues last season, it's not a good idea to "replace" one of your better shooters with a bad one.

If Shane battier was the James Worthy of college ball, then Patrick Ewing Jr. is the Shane Battier of college ball. We have no use for a Shane Battier in NCAA that can't compete in the NBA.

Knicks bought him off for ticket sales, so I think they got quite a lot in this trade.

No need they traded for weis's draft rights.

Ewing jr's partially guaranteed contract for Weis's $0.

I hope to never see this guy in a Rockets jersey!
