Chancellor has good basketball knowledge and is a likable person.

But his accent is too much. He is beyond finishing school.

    I much prefer Mike Newlin.

As was mentioned earlier, we are an international city and team.

We don't have to go with the home town guy (or worse girl).

Imagine having him and Cooper on the same broadcast for 70+ games.

    Ugh...

Why don't we have a tryout. Plenty of good people out there who woouldf want to give this a go. Knowing the Rockets, in my opinion, is not so important. That will happen with anyone. But being able to analyze the game and have a presence in the booth is a skill. Syracuse has tons of talent.

For some reason I hear two things:

1 - The theme song for King of the Hill
2 - Thinking of hearing Van do color commentary for the Rockets, I keep picturing Boomhauer on the sideline with Bill and Bill constantly saying, "What did you just say?"

I would rather have Bull than Van. I hope he proves me wrong.

Murphy won't be part of Rockets in '04-05
TV analyst spot likely to be filled by Chancellor
    By DAVID BARRON
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calvin Murphy's leave of absence from his broadcast duties with the Rockets will continue throughout the 2004-05 season, the team announced Friday.

The decision clears the way for the Rockets to replace Murphy as the team's television analyst with Comets coach Van Chancellor, possibly as soon as next week.

Murphy, the Hall of Fame guard who has been a Rockets broadcaster for 14 seasons, has been on leave since he was charged in March with sexually abusing five of his daughters more than a decade ago. He was indicted July 1 and is expected to go to trial in November.

"We're waiting to see what the legal process proves," said Tad Brown, the club's senior vice president of sales, marketing and broadcasting. "Everybody is focused on moving ahead with the season, and Calvin is focused on getting ready to go to court. ... We will wait to see what happens at the trial, and that is all we can do."

Murphy, 55, is in the final year of his contract with the Rockets. He played 13 years with the team before serving as an assistant coach and working as the team's community services adviser in addition to his broadcasting duties.

Brown said the Rockets have not reached a formal agreement with Chancellor to team with Bill Worrell but added: "We think he could do a good job and work well with Bill. But we're not ready to make an announcement."

Attorney Rusty Hardin, who is representing Murphy in the criminal case, said he and his client have no quarrel with the team's decision.

"Although this wasn't done in conjunction with us, it makes perfect sense for us as we concentrate on the trial," Hardin said.

Murphy is charged with three counts of indecency with a child and three counts of aggravated sexual assault, each punishable by up to life in prison. He has said the allegations stem from a dispute with family members over money.

I would take Van over Bull. I agree with the posters who say that Bullard is very BORING. I think Van's insight is also better, judging from the few games he has done, and his personality is better for color commentating. Who cares about his voice.

Also, I like how some people want to exclude him because of his Southern accent, because apparently as a "diverse" city we shouldn't hire those types of people.

so I'm guessing the WNBA coaches don't work near as hard as the NBA coaches during offseason? I couldn't imagine an NBA coach ever having time to broadcast WNBA all summer long..

A season of Chancellor would get old in about three days... Please, even middle-of-the-road Bullard would be better. Why Is their not a Scotty Brooks or Mario Ellie type not out there for this job?

Zero. Les would probably have to take out a loan in order to pay Chuck enough to land him. And even then, does anybody see Barkley leaving his cushy job two days a week on the TNT set in order to go out on the road 41 times a year. Charles will take a look at the first back to back in different cities and then bow out right there.

I'm pretty sure he gets paid big bucks by TNT.

If we're going to go with someone who nobody can understand, what about Moses?

I would be happy with Bull or Van. I happen to like Van's awkward dialect. Murphy brought and intangible that is not able to be replaced. Van has a different and equally unique intangible that I think would work.

Bull is Bull. He's a legend. He's immortal. He's all that's left of the rings and I would love him to be involved in an official capacity.

Here some crazy ideas of people I would love to have on color commentary-

Bum Phillips- doesn't know much BB but he is hilarious
Mattress Mac- the ultimate homer, I could stand about 10 minutes of him
Marvin Zindler- I could stand about 5 minutes of him
Larry Dierker- Knows as much basketball as baseball
Jennifer Garner- sleeper pick and a Houston native
Barbara Bush- She wouldn't be afraid of slamming Van Gundy

or on a more serious note:

Clyde Drexler- Opinionated and good communicator
Elvin Hayes- another guy not afraid to give his opinion
