it would be great to use the TE on James and a SnT for Childress...then u split the MLE. I seriously think we need Josh Childress on our team to go to the WCF.

    Yao/Deke
    Battier/Howard/Baxter
    Tmac/Novak
    Childress/Bogans/Head
    Alston/James

We can go big, small , or fast.

It's a good thing they are in the east. We wouldn't have to play them til the Finals.

We must sign Mike James....he is a bad man!

Trade Rafer quick...before the rest of the league figures out that he can't play.

Yeah....CD and Lindsey will sign MARCUS BANKS....

.....tout him as a real "find"...a "jem".....

...he will disappoint just like all the rest of their "discoveries".

We'll pass on James...and he will be part of a Dallas Mavs championship next season.

    just wait and see.

Look, I'm as cynical as the next person, but MJames badly wants to return to the Rox. The main reason Cuban wants him is to keep him from the Rockets. He'd be a luxury in Dallas. Here he'd be essential.

We haven't signed MJ yet because we have to iron out the number of years and, perhaps, work out a sign-and-trade (Luther + Moochie TE = app. 5 mil starting) so we can keep the MLE intact.

You can't combine players and TEs when trading for another player...

But I agree, that the only hold up to his verbal agreement with us is the number of years. We want 3, he wants 5, how about 4?

The full MLE is fair IMO, although I'd rather do an SnT using JH. Then sign another PF with the MLE. Then let both TEs expire to open up more cap room in the future...

I don't understand this "you can't combine a player with the TE" etc etc. I see this admonishment constantly.

That's what the TE is for, isn't it? I want your 5 million dollar player. You want my one million dollar player. Hmn, big problem. Oh wait; I have a TE from a previous trade of 4 million bucks. Problem solved.

Someone really, really explain this to me, because in Larry Coon's CBA....

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

Here is a more complicated example of a legal non-simultaneous trade:

A team has a $4 million Traded Player exception from an earlier trade (think Moochie Norris--ROXTXIA), and a $10 million player it currently wants to trade.

Another team has three players making $4 million, $5 million and $7 million, and the teams want to do a three-for-one trade with these players.

This is legal -- the $5 million and $7 million players together make less than the 125% plus $100,000 allowed for the $10 million player ($12,600,000), and the $4 million player exactly fits within the $4 million Traded Player exception.

So the $4 million player actually completes the previous trade, leaving the two teams trading a $10 million player for a $5 million and a $7 million player. From the other team's perspective it's all just one big simultaneous trade: their $4 million, $5 million and $7 million players for the $10 million player.

The 4 million TE is used to take care of the 4 million salary guy, and the 10 million salary guy takes care of the 5+7 million guys.

Anybody that you take on with the TE has to "fit" underneath the TE. That's exactly how they are using it in this example.

TE must match exactly ONE contract.

suppose we are doing trades with Bulls,

    trade A(valid)
    TE(4.2M) for Ben Gordon(3.9M)
    Juwon Howard(6.4M) for Kirk Hinrich(3.1M)+Andres Nocioni(3.0M)

    trade B(invalid)
    TE(4.2M)+Juwon Howard(6.4M) for Tyson Chandler(10M)

You're missing the concept. The TE was used as part of the trade but it was not "added in" or aggregated to match the $10M players' salary. IOW, there was a 2 for 1 trade that worked to obtain the $10M player for the $12M in salary allotted to the $7M and $5M players. That's the +/- 125% + 100K portion of the trade. The $4M player was obtained via the $4M TE. The trades have to work independently. In this case they do.

But you could not have taken the $7M player and added a portion of the $4M TE to obtain the $10M player. Do you see the difference? It's a fine line of distinction but you can't combine a TE with a single player to obtain a single player.

To really drive yourself insane on the TE, go here.... :D

The key word there is non-simultaneous.

It is not possible to split Luther/TE for James (re-signed to MLE money) in two non-simultaneous deals that work cap-wise. I think that's pretty obvious.

Actually the term non-simultaneous has nothing to with that. It's a reference to the fact that the TE was originally generated in one deal, and later used in another. Like for example, when we traded Glen Rice away for John Amaechi and the TE, and then later on we used the TE to land Mike James (it's a bit more complicated then that since we also folded the TE into the Mcgrady trade, but for the purposes of this discussion, let's keep it simple). So the non-simultaneous part is the fact that we got a TE in the Rice deal and ended up using it later in the James trade.

I wasn't impressed with Mutombo's performance last year. We should expect it will drop off even more this coming season. Gotta find someone else to back up Yao - so is everyone writing off Maciej Lampe?

OK, in the archaic world of trades, it makes a little more sense.

Or I can just shrug and say, Fine, we can't make such a trade UNLESS....etc etc.

    Ahh.. I see.

I thought non-simultaneous as TE for James and then Recce Gaines for Zendon Hamilton in that deal w/ Milwaukee, for example.

    Misunderstood it, my bad.
