Major League Baseball sources told FOX 26 Sports on Monday that the Houston Astros have reached a contract agreement with free agent pitcher Mike Hampton.

The agreement is pending Hampton successfully completing a team physical.

Citing team policy, Astros General Manager Ed Wade declined comment.

Hampton, who pitched for the Astros from 1994 to 1999, was with the Atlanta Braves the past four years.

However, he did not play during the 2006 and 2007 seasons because of injuries.

In 2008, Hampton was 3-4 with the Braves with an ERA of 4.85. He missed the first four months of the season because of an injury.

During his final nine starts with Atlanta, Hampton had a record of 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA.

Hampton's best season with the Astros came in 1999 when he was 22-4 with a 2.90 ERA.

    what a joke

I'm sure the org will try to tout Mike as the missing piece to a contending team

Perhaps Juan Gonzales is available as well

i'm guessing it's a pretty heavy incentive-laden deal. not a whole lot of risk, frankly. not a bad move...not a gamechanger, either, in all likelihood. certainly doesn't keep you, in and of itself, from chasing other deals.

I like this move a lot, just need Tim Bogar back to build a team that can contend in a time machine.

So... one has to wonder if there is a tie in between this and pulling the deal for Wolf from the table.

Only if we can get Ricky Gutierrez and John Cangelosi in a package deal.

If it's incentive laden and a smallish base salary, I'm in love with this deal.

I still miss him as much as Bagwell.

Hopefully this Hampton deal is either incentive laden or 1 year. I can't see any good reason to sign him other than on the cheap. If it's even remotely close to what Woody Williams got, they made a huge mistake. Hampton has barely pitched in 3 years. Since he left the Astros, he's been fairly injury prone. I personally think this was a bad idea.

Pitcher Mike Hampton has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Houston Astros pending a physical exam, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The contract will pay Hampton a base salary of about $2 million plus incentives, the source said.
