I would guess that the Astros pitching staff would much rather have Everett at SS than an average fielding SS who hits .275 with a .340 OBP. Baseball is not all about offense.

Right now, Wilson would be the opening day LF. Bagwell has to prove he is back in spring training for that to change. If he does, you could see Wilson get time at all 3 outfield spots or possibly play CF or RF full time if the Astros decided to move one of Taveras/Lane midseason.

The Astros i'm sure are looking at this as, Jeff prove you are back. Even if he does, he will need constant rest throughout the season. My point is at minimum you have a solid 6th place hitter as long this deal is finalized whether or not Bags can play. You could even see a lineup of Biggio/Bagwell/Lance/Morgan/Lane/Wilson/Ausmus/Everett. Something like that.

Because it is OK, at least IMO. As long as:
    1) We don't want it at the expense of winning.
    2) We don't call people "racist" when that is clearly not the case.

Hey, I'm a Polak, and when I saw Nowitzki lighting up the league I was thrilled... until I learned he was German.

I believe it's OK too. Why would an African American want a player here that can't help us win? We are talking 2 extremes here.

When Bob Watson was the GM here there was a poster in my inner-city neighborhood featuring Kevin Bass, Billy Hatcher and Gerald Young and the poster read, "We thought you knew". If they thought it was important in 1987 then why not now.

Again I'm not trying to change your position, just hoping you will fully understand mine.

We have to be moving some combination of Everett, Lane, Lidge, Burke, plus pitching prospects for Tejada or Manny, hopefully Tejada.

this is actually funny to me because I was just saying the same thing in the thread DaDakota started about himself being banned from the D&D forum.

When Steve Francis was traded there was this guy named Mouton who always called Vandameer's show on 610 when he had a solo show and ripped on Steve like twice a week. So one day I called and I got him pretty bad talking about how he must didn't do anything all day but call the radio station and blah blah. then the next day he called and said something about me.

Well later in Dec. when 610 had their gathering at Kline's I went and I met Mouton. And he was one of the nicest guys I ever met, and we had some mutual interests and even knew some of the same guys. I with my friend and they also got along really well.

I felt so stupid because I really thought I wouldn't like the guy because he was a big Francis basher.

My two cents here: There is nothing wrong with embracing a team because a player you relate with is on the team ... there is something wrong with making accusations about the team (without some kind of evidence) if there isn't.

As everyone pointed out earlier, the percentage of African Americans in baseball has dropped significantly and I think it's around 10% (?) now ... that is a problem in itself, but that doesn't really make an organization racist to not have a black player on the roster, especially given that they have in the past. After all, how many NBA teams don't have a Chinese player on their roster?

Initially, a few years back, the claim was that the Astros were racist. I know that's not what AB is saying now, but the thread a few years back said the Astros did this "deliberately" ... passing up better black players for "good ol boys". Pretty bold accusation.

in defense of AB, it would be pretty hard to argue that the NBA or any other sports league was being racists against whites when all the owners are white. and that's where the cultural difference comes in, some blacks, rightly or wrongly, are always gonna have racism in the back of their mind in situations like this because we are the minority. I'm not defending AB calling the organization racist, just saying his perspective in that regard is gonna be different.

Yeah, some people (some would call them trolls) have made it where no one can forget he said that. I think he was simply speaking out of a frustration that many of us can't know or understand. People were trying to pin those same comments on him here after he modified his past statements.

That thread was based on what I felt and what other peoples views were too, media and Astro employees alike. And very apparantly my Sword of Damocles.

    What I really said was

Use it in your sig and at the time I meant it.

    and

Which is what I maintain even though my position has softened.
