I don't see them cutting that much guaranteed cash and keeping players like Landry and Harris who are guaranteed almost nothing.

    1) Mike Harris: $50,000 - partial guarantee of minimum salary
    2) Carl Landry: ~$100,000-150,000 - partial guarantee of minimum salary
    3) John Lucas III: $500,000 - partial guarantee of $770,610 salary
    4) Justin Reed: $1,436,500 - Not sure how much is guaranteed this year or next
    5) Bob Sura: $1,000,000 - partial guarantee of ~$3.8M salary

I think those will be the 5 that are cut. The Rockets could dump all of them for a little over 3 million depending on what Reed has guaranteed next season. In fact the reason I think the Rockets were so reticent to give Landry a guaranteed contract to his liking in the beginning was because they were afraid he may be one of the guys they needed to cut. When they drafted him they didn't have Scola, Butler or Francis taking up roster spots. Either way, I think they hold onto Snyder and possibly Novak.

I have a hard time believing they would cut Mike Harris and Landry over Novak. I think either Mike Harris or Landry will be cut, but I think Novak hasn't shown enough to stay over them.

Justin Reed is owed over $1.5M this season AND has a player option for another $1.5M+ next season. If Reed is waived, then he will be owed his full salary for this season and next. The CBA treats these situations as calling for an automatic exercise of the player option. That means that the Rockets will have Reed's $1.5M count against the luxury tax threshhold this year and then AGAIN next year. That's a worse tax hit than Snyder's $2.3M for only one year.

Like I've said time and time again, just because his upside isn't as great as that of Landry, Harris or Novak doesn't mean that Reed is an automatic cut. He is simply owed too much money for the team to waive him without SERIOUSLY considering the luxury tax consequences.

The four that I think are getting cut:
    1. Sura's contract
    2. JL3
    3. Reed
    4. Harris

I have the feeling that Novak will not be around comes season opening date.

I understand your point, but Snyder is owed 2.3 mil for this season and Reed is owed 3 mil over the next two seasons. The difference is 700k, not that big of deal to an NBA team if they see more of a value/upside with one of the players.
As far as shipping Novak and keeping Reed or Harris, I just don't see it. Harris, although active and more of an offensive threat than Hayes, is still a 6'5" power forward. Hayes plays strong defense and can barely hold his own out there, I don't see a need for another very undersized non-drafted rookie PF with a non-guaranteed contract making a team with as many guaranteed contracts as we currently have. Same thing with Landry.
Novak's D is crap, he's a subpar rebounder, but he can shoot lights out, we don't have many players on our team with that can shoot like that, ....Head, Brooks.... So, I think they will hold on to him, put him on the IR, and let Harris and Landry go.

No way. Novak can do only one thing, shoot, and he doesn't seem to be able to shoot lights out with a defender in his face. He can't rebound, he can't play defense, he can't cut to the basket, etc. At least Harris and Landry, and even Reed can do more than one thing. They aren't going to hold on to someone that isn't going to help them. What if T-Mac goes down or Yao, even Steve and Bonzi can get hurt, all of them have been hurt the last few seasons and missed a lot of games, would you rather have Novak playing instead of Mike Harris or Justin Reed? You want guys who give you the best chance of winning every night, not just guys to put on the IL to keep them. If he's just DNP every night, how does that benefit the Rockets or him?

On a different note, Justin Reeds 1.5 million toward the cap isn't that much. We're just over the cap which means it hits us harder. Besides, they can work a buyout with Reed whiich means his salary hits us for this season only.

They will try to trade Reed, either by himself or in a package. But if they aren't successful, then I can see the Rockets still cutting him. They are not going to keep a player who is not in their future plans just because he is owed 1.5 million. Rafer at 4.5 yes, but not Reed.

Novak shouldn't be on the roster in place of Mike Harris.

I like Harris. I guess we'll see how they all perform in practices and preseason games, but I really like that guy.

    -------
    Sura
    JL3
    Reed
    Landry

I think are the weakest links.

Like I said in my post:

That said, we have no need for Harris, Landry and Reed. Currently we have seven guys that can play the 4 (not including Battier). Harris and Landry are both on non-guaranteed contracts and are basically undersized PF's like Hayes. How many Chucks do we need? Do we need a 6'5", 6'6" and a 6'7" version of the same guy? We have Hayes, Scola, Novak, Butler and Reed. There is no reason to keep non-guaranteed redundant players around, while cutting guys with guaranteed contracts. Novak has a skill that none of the others have. I've already stated that he can't rebound or D up, but he can spread the floor and keep the opposing teams 4 out on the perimeter and out of the lane, away from Yao. If you think its a better idea to load up on two-guard sized PF's, so that we can really clog the lane, making Yao's job that much harder, that's fine, I just don't agree.

Cut Landry, Reed and Novak and it solves all your problems. Novak should be first on the cut list, his only skill is 3 pointers and he can't hit those in the game so he is basically useless.

Novak's poor defence will easily lead to more fouls called on Yao. And he can't make his shoots in regular season. So we should cut him.

why so many people putting Sura on their list?
    we have 20 under contracts
cutting 4 means we already counting Sura out

Some of these players are good enough that other teams may want them. If we could get teams to pickup some of our extra players, we wouldnt have to cut them and worry about the cap hit.

I dont see the Rockets keeping any of these players just because they are expensive to get rid of. The amount of revenue brought in by a trip to the finals will offset the costs of making sure the lineup is right.

Butler hasn't done anything to guarantee him a spot
    that's why there's 7 preseason games
let's watch few more of them

I can't believe how unknowledgeable the fans on this site are!

Landry is not going to get cut. He may not make the 12 man roster, but he will certainly make the inactive list.

The Rockets ARE NOT going to spend $1,000,000 to get a 2nd round draft pick, then cut that player!

Lord, give me patience with the people on this forum.
