No way Pippen should be ahead of Dr J.

That is equilavent to some of you who still say you'd rather have Dream than Michael Jordan.

Great article. I could nitpick about a few things, but it's not far from spot-on.

Pippen was a better rebounder, better passer, better three-point shooter, better shot-blocker, better overall defender. Sure, Dr. J was more creative, better mid-range shooter, better scorer overall. He probably had a little ballhandling on Pippen. You could make an argument for either being ahead of the other; I don't see how there's "no way" Pippen could be ahead of Dr. J.

And yes, I'd also rather have Dream than Jordan. Also Wilt, Russell, & Abdul-Jabbar. Size is king in the NBA.

    - How many times was Little Scottie Quitten "The Man " on his team?
Only 1 and a half seasons his entire NBA career.

    - When given the chance to be the focal point of his team how did he react?
Like a little baby. He quit on the Bulls during a play-off game and refused to go in the game because Phil Jackson gave Tony Kucoc the last shot of the game. He was brought into Houston to help lead Houston back to the NBA championship and we all know how he acted here.

Pippen was never the only help Jordan had in his six championships. When the Rockets won their last championship Jordan and Pippen were on the Bulls together and could not pull it off. With out Grant, Cartwright and Paxon the Bulls do not win the first 3 championships...period. Without Rodman and Kerr the Bulls do not win the last three.

    Rick Barry
    Elgin Baylor
    Dr. J
    Dominique Wilkins

were all the main players on their teams for most of their careers. Rick Barry was "The Man " on his championship team unlike Quitten.

Mark Aquire, Adrian Dantly, Alex English, Were all great players that were the focal point of their teams for an extended period of time and none were the type of cancer that Pippen was and all would have been just as valuable to Jordan while he won his six NBA championships. Hell I thought Dale Elliswas better in his prime than Pippen. Could you imagine Dale Ellis shooting that unstoppable outside shot on those Bulls teams?

Pippen was the worst type of cancer...he pretended to be a leader but he quit on his team when they needed him the most.

Look, I just went through this exhaustively yet again, very recently. I don't feel like doing it again. However, I would have you not treat my opinion (and others' as well) as a joke without even offering any evidence to the contrary. It's quite juvenile.

crash5179... and without Pippen or Worthy by his side, Jordan did... nothing at all. I fail to see why this fact is always overlooked.

Was Bird an inconsistent shooter? He was a career .496 shooter with five years over .500. Until his last two years when he was basically immobile, he never shot under .471 and even then shot over .450.

If you were drafting out of college you'd take Dream 10 times out of 10 over Jordan.

    It's very simple.

You could have replaced Pippen with any number of small forwards that were in the league at the time and Jordan still gets his 6 rings. Aguire, English, Ellis, Wilkins all would have been more than enough for Jordan.

Who would you have replaced Jordan with? No one.

    Pippen way overratted...period.

9 other people voted that Pippen should be ranked higher, I wonder where they're at, I enjoyed the article and what he said about Pippen. But personally I'd have Pippen as number one on my list.

In my opinion put any great scorer by Pippen's side and he would have still won the 6 rings, ie Kobe, Tmac and he would have won a few rings with a healthy VC and PP.

Now I find that funny! Especially considering how Quitten walked out on his team at the end of a crucial playoff game because Phil refused to give him the last shot.

I know you are just trying to stir the pot with your comments though.

Thats definitely true. But knowing what we all know now, how could you take anybody over Jordan?

My evidance to the contrary would be that Jordan won 6 championships without even a decent big man.

Dantley was a sieve on defense (plus he was said by some to be a locker room cancer). Aguirre wasn't as bad, but no one feared his D. Same with Ellis. English and Wilkins were both capable, but didn't put forth the effort often enough.

Pippen was certainly Jordan's second banana on offense, though he was still a better passer and 3-point shooter. But just as Pippen was second banana on offense, so was Jordan second banana on defense. Just as Pippen got all the credit for his offense (leading to what you view as overrated), such is the reason why Jordan was hugely overrated on defense. None of the players you mentioned could guard the other team's #1 guy every night like Pippen did. If you had replaced Pippen with Aguirre, all of a sudden Jordan has to take that role. What would result would be that Jordan would gain a reputation like Wilkins and English: a guy who can defend well, but doesn't go his hardest all the time, because he carries the offense too. Pippen was what allowed Jordan to be known as a great defender for an extended period of time. With anyone else, Jordan isn't quite the same player.

That team may have won some championships if you replace Pippen with one of those guys, but I doubt as many. And even if they did, they would not have been as good... maybe winning some series in 7 where they would have won them in 5 or 6.

Drexler and Pippen would've won a few, but not as many. You replace either Jordan or Pippen, and it hurts the Bulls.

And the pot calls the kettle back.

Why is it that you place such emphasis on being quote "the man" on a team? So it isn't possible that the second-greatest player ever could be on the same team with the best player ever, therefore not being "the man," but nonetheless being great?

Besides that, I would think you would consider that Pippen put on maybe the greatest display of do-everything, all-around game ever in 1994-95. None of the guys you mentioned could lead their team in every major statistical category.

because just as pippen never did anything without jordan, jordan didnt accomplish jack without pip.

and having just a jordan doesnt gaurantee that a pippen will fall into your laps.

I'm pretty sure it was Jordan who hit all those game winning shots. No big man can do that for you with time running out the way he did.

Never ever heard anyone call Dantley a locker room problem. The only time Dantley was ever any problem was when he was traded to Dallas and decided he would rather not play ball then play in Dallas.

All of the above players were so much better than Quitten on offense its not even close. Imagine the offensive pressure that would have been removed from Jordan if he were playing along side an NBA Championship MVP like Worthy or someone like Dale Ellis that could shoot like no one else from the outside. And just for the record I'll take Jordans defense over that of Pippens any day.

Also Pippen did not cover either Gary Payton or Shawn Kemp the sonics two best players in that series. He also did not cover Karl Malone in the two series against Utah...I think a little credit should be given to someone named Rodman for that. Now that I think of it he did not cover Chuck in the Phoenix series. Hmmmmm.

And 94-95 was the one and only year that Pippen was the man on his team....ironically enough it is also when he earned the nick name Quitten for qutting on his team in a play-off series when he refused to go into the game becuase Phil gave the last shot to someone else. BTW hasn't Francis lead the Rockets in every single catagory before? I certainly don't think anyone is going to confuse him for one of the greatest PGs in history.
