For those of you that is hoping we draft Hassan Whiteside or Daniel Orton in San Francisco, you really need to read this. Hoopshype was granted access to the workout of Whiteside and Orton. I won't post all of the story but the one thing that caught my eye was this. "Both players have been working out with Houston Rockets bigman Hilton Armstrong who looked like a man body wise compared to the pair. In the one on one exericse, the trio would take turns going one on one against each other. Armstrong beat them 5-0-0, showing that the young bucks still have a ways to go. They just could not score on Armstrong or against each other, while Armstrong used his strength, experience and savvy to find ways to score on them." Thats a little scary if neither of them can beat a scrub. They also had pictures. Whiteside's fame makes him look like a small forward. Link

And Hilton Armstrong is just AWFUL... I have a feeling that we may have a TON of busts in this draft... I'm glad we have Daryl making the decisions...
To be fair... many of these draftees are undeveloped and don't have that NBA body, framework, or footwork yet. Not to mention that they usually don't play 7'0 people in college. Hilton may be a scrub on an NBA team, but any scrub in the NBA can school a few inexperienced college kids...
Hilton 'Heel' Armstrong and now the work out b*tch? LOL how his life has gone upside down from that epic heel moment..
Many young kids have come out early in order to avoid the potential lockout, this can lead to a lot of problems. I've always felt that DM will try and get a center through a trade, because the chances of getting anything more than a raw project is low. Guys with some experience like Xavier Henry have a better chance of getting drafted by the Rockets, despite their shortcomings.
Relax guys, everything you needed to know was said in the first sentence: "Hilton Armstrong who looked like a man body wise compared to the pair." Hilton was not only more experienced, he also had a more muscular body. On the other hand, Whiteside and Orton are built like scarecrows. The only logical conclusion is that they would get pwned 1-on-1. If we get whiteside it won't be because he can contribute immediately, it will be because he shows a lot potential. Obviously Armstrong is better NOW, however once Whiteside starts putting some muscle itll be a different story. That'swhy its better to get a high potential dude like him now, when we have Yao Ming. in 2 year's time Whiteside will be ready, and Yao Ming can take the Deke-Mentor-benchplayer role.
Not true, especially when it comes to lottery picks. Most lottery picks should be able to score ONCE against one of the worst players in the NBA.
Duncan, Yao, Hakeem, Amare, and DHoward as draftees would have schooled Armstrong. The guys that would have struggled that would put up zero points are Darko, Kwame, and Curry. If they are going to be at least a decent C, they could have scored 1 basket even on a lucky shot.
Isn't Whiteside's offense weaker, by far, than his defense? Of the people you listed that could school Armstrong, only Howard would be suspect, offensively. Obviously, the other four would dominate Armstrong.
One-on-one? Haha c'mon guys. What the hell does that prove? I remember seeing the cookie monster looking pretty good one-on-one in practice last season...
Come on, your comparisons are just too extreme. Nobody's calling Whiteside a sure fire #1. Or he wouldn't be on the radar of a team with pick #14. But even that aside, I believe Armstrong would have dominated both Howard and Yao coming out. Duncan and Hakeem were 4-year college players, so they're not good comparisons. I bet Armstrong can beat Cousins and Favors one-on-one too.
1. Duncan and Hakeem spent 4 years in college. Also these are HOF guys which none of the big men in this draft look like they're gonna be. 2. Yao, Amare and Dhoward are older or around Armstrong's age. Of course they would have dominated him, its not like Armstrong at the time would have been a skinny high school player. 3. This is all speculation on your part. If we had a time machine and brought current armstrong to face against draftee yao, amare and dh even before their first camp there's no guarantee they would have scored. DH for sure didn't know anything more than dunk the ball, Yao hasn't gone up against any body close to his size before and Amare had no perimeter jump yet. Do you think they stand a chance against a dude who had 4 years of nba exp, and is desperate to land a contract somewhere?
This doesn't mean much......psychologically Hilton is at a big advantage. not to mention college bigs dont need polished moves to succeed...sometimes they dont need any moves...Hilton has moves, just not good ones, that alone also gives him an advantage. We also dont know who was tired or not.
1. Small sample size. 2. The NBA game isn't one on one- it's five on five. 3. Hilton has way more experience with this kind of workout than the declarees do; he should do much better. Bottom line: these results might be 1% of the evaluation of these players, not the biggest factor
