Improving the defense by getting the worst defensive catcher in baseball. Would be like adding trae young to improve the defense
Getting the passed ball champion that can't frame or throw out runners to improve defense is something.
I am happy he is gone. But like every other season of his MLB career, he was much better than average throwing last year. Many things were his fault last year. Stolen bases against him was not one of them.
Astro fans thinking Maldonado is a good defensive catcher is like Yankee fans thinking Jeter is a good defensive shortstop.
Maldy was so, so close to passing Humberto Quintero. It’s a shame he just didn’t get the chance to keep going. Unlikely he was going to catch number 16, though.
Clearly that is categorized as players at primary position not fWAR as a catcher, as Biggio and his 8.8 fWAR as a catcher is not included. Cliff Johnson played quite a bit at other positions. He played more 1B than C in 1975 and didn't even catch in 1977 playing mostly in LF. That fWAR may be much lower as a catcher.
I much prefer bWAR to fWAR but find myself using fangraphs more and more because it's so convenient to find stuff like this a research by various filters. I would not even know where to find something like this at baseballreference, or even if it will let you.
