So the initial report was wrong. LOL! Must be some narrower record like by a Minnesota CFer or something.
Correa has 29 GiDP this year. per baseball reference the single season record is only 36, and there is like 20 something games left. Don't look at the highlighted line. Look at the bolded line. Sure he probably wont get 1 GiDP every 2 games to match that record, but he is in the ball park. 4 more and he will have 3rd most ever in 1 season and most since 1985.
Huh? Jim Crane convinced a large number of investors to make a bid to buy the Astros, then he convinced MLB to approve the sale when he really didn't have the solvency that they want from owners. He bought the team 1 decade ago for $680 million dollars and now the team is worth at least $2.3 billion dollars and likely would sell for well over 2.5 billion dollars. He has nearly quadrupled the value of the team in 11 years. Further, in 11 years his team has won two World Series, has won the AL Pennant 4 times and make the playoffs 7 times. I am not sure what else he needs to do to convince you that he knows how to manage a business organization, not to mention an MLB baseball operation. So I am sure a Little Cesar's wouldn't be an issue for him. Also, Drew Gilbert likely will be a good MLB player, but the Astros are set to win in the next 2-3 years and not 5-6 years down the line - Justin Verlander helps the Astros do that. Maximizing the window of an elite organization is very important. Gilbert could turn out great - but ask the Angels how that is working.
Good lord. There are multiple criticisms you can lob at Jim Crane. Being a bad business person or an unsuccessful CEO is absolutely not one of them.
He has been incredibly successful as the owner, but so much of the investment return is the ridiculousness of sports valuations. Jeffrey Loria is one of the worst owners in history. He ran the Expos into the ground, but made nearly 150% return in under 3 years. He then butchered the Marlins and made 10 times his investment 15 years later. That $680M became less due to the league change, IIRC ($600M?)
I have seen several different numbers - $600M and then there are reports that the actual amount ended up being only $440M... so I don't know for sure which one. The most impressive thing Crane did was convincing the league to accept his bid, and also his willingness to pay more than anyone else. Almost everyone around the game paying attention felt there was no way that Crane would raise the money, win the bidding or get league approval and he did all of those things.
Maybe the lower numbers factor in the Comcast network as a separate deal or whatever the team ended up getting back related to the suit they settled against Drayton & Comcast.
Damn I miss that crazy smoke-tootin' bull. Just had a brilliant idea for how they should reincorporate the Dome's old scoreboard visuals (with updated technology)... I mean, Pumpkin Patch Railroad is cool & all... but with all those extra $aving$ this year, Jim should really employ one of these drone companies to celebrate playoff series wins (ALDS/ALCS, WS) or the Friday night fireworks they have...
Regarding the moves the Astros DIDN'T make this past off season: Mancini- .234 avg, 4 HRs, 28 RBIs in 79 games Vazquez- .222 avg, 6 HRs, 28 RBIs in 88 games Yuli- . 248 avg, 3 HRs, 20 RBIs in 90 games Abreu/Diaz look like great options compared to what we had Abreu has more HRs (14) and almost as many RBIs (74) in 120 games himself (than all 3 combined)
