The two party system would be great if there was more of a difference between the two parties. To me they just about equally abhorrent and equally corrupt. I'd like to see more than two to lessen the influence of the two.

the difference is in philosophy...if you can't see the differences in philosophy after arguments on this board and the 2000 election, i don't know if you'll ever see it!

1797- In March, George Washington expressed his concerns about political parties._ In his Farewell Address, he stated that he felt that political parties would split the nation.

It's true that these other political parties have the "opportunity" to compete with the big 2 but it's not exactly a level playing field.

How many times have you seen one of their candidates involved in the big televised debates? ... or had their message broadcast to the masses by slick, heavily funded PR campaigns? Only one I can think of is Ross Perot and he got 20%! And everybody thought he was crazy - what does that tell you?

I mean, how can the independents truly compete with the money and publicity machines of the big 2? Plus, they have the uphill climb against the idea (heavily pushed by the Dems and Reps - hmmm, that makes them sound like gangstas) that a vote for an independent is a wasted vote.

I think the only way to leverage any real option into the equation is to regulate the campaigns so that no party has any real edge (except what they stand for).

BTW, does this remind anybody else of Brewster's Millions? We need a new option on the ballot: None of the Above!

I guess the question is, do the two parties have a monopoly? I'm not sure that they do, because at anytime the people can choose a different party to win. The people still have the choice.

That being said, if a third party ever wins the majority vote for presidency, but loses the election to house politics, then you have a monopoly in my opinion. No doubt about it. That would be tragic. And is entirely possible.
