Seriously, this is the type of crazy you find in a cult. Lots of ideas with big words but without supporting evidence. They appeal to the like-minded but aren't really good at explaining things to normal people. It's pseudo-intellectual. I have a science degree. I'm used to explaining really complex ideas and the detail of explanation needed can get really intricate. Before you can talk about how big stuff work, you need to explain about how its components work and how they fit together. This guy just throws whatever in there. Some concepts are incredibly abstract.
The Daily Show is satire. The interview segments are satirizing BS news stations/programs that take things out of context and use them for their own political benefit. Those interview segments are always ridiculously put together to highlight the absurdity. If the audience is too dumb to tell the difference, that is on them. The GOP declared open season on low information voters a long time ago. Turnabout is fair play.
It is obviously left leaning. Saying they have a political agenda is probably going to far. I have not seen TDS try to get people elected or seen any real political activism outside of the show itself. Their agenda is to make people laugh and sell advertising.
Agenda may be too strong a word. I admit they're still a commercialized show. But, as said, satire can be used for political benefit and they are very left-leaning. Re interviews: Any comments on the video?
Well then you are not interested in having a dialogue. You are only interested in making your point that TDS is the boogy man. But no piece of information in this world is without context. Ask yourself this. What does "right" mean? I'll give you a hint. It depends.
How is "Well Fox News does it" even an argument here? Is TDS trying to parody Fox News when takes things out of context for the purpose of humor? Honestly, I don't think that's the joke.
I can't remember at what point in the video he says that but what's your take on the editing done by TDS? I'm not gonna make excuses for him if you find him disagreeable.
I've been very keen on making a dialogue. I've addressed you point for point, haven't I? I've made my issues with TDS very clear. I find absolutely no reason addressing your complaints about Fox News unless you're saying what durvasa's described; which just adds to my stance that there's something wrong about TDS.
It is easy to be "edgy" and deliver pointed attacks when you can always fall back on the "but, we're just a comedy show!" excuse. They don't have to fact check, they don't have to maintain journalistic integrity, they don't have to stay neutral, etc. etc. Now I'm not saying that major cable news in the US does any of that either - BUT they do have to cover their asses in a lot of ways, so they have to at least give off the perception that they follow the rules. Since everything mock news does can be considered satire, it is a no-lose situation for them. Be outlandish, say what everyone is probably thinking... and laugh all the way to the bank without fear of repercussions.
Indeed - too many comedy shows fall back on the comedy show "excuse"! It's really unfair to non comedy shows.
This is why I don't get the fascination with Colbert or Stewart. They are doing what stand up comics and court jesters have been doing since the dawn of time. They just do it in a mock news show setting. The sad thing is, the younger generation thinks that they are "ground breaking" shows because they push the envelope. That they are the only "real news" they'll get every day. What the **** do you think George Carlin did for 40+ years of stand up? Not a Carlin fan? Richard Pryor did the same thing. I respect and admire both Colbert and Stewart, but what they are doing isn't revolutionary - it isn't even close. The journalists and guerrilla reporters that are on the ground, in war zones writing the hard-hitting articles that actually change things are the revolutionaries. They are still out there, you just have to put your damn cell phone down long enough to find them.
We got it. If you close your eyes and ears and take this one TDS incident in isolation, then you are horrified by what they have done. Got it. However, it comes off rather hypocritical (which you haven't bothered to rebuke). You are clearly only interested in furthering your own agenda rather than debating the merits on the issue (which you only want to do on your own terms and don't accept counter opinions. Feel free to join us in reality, however. It's nice here.
This isn't an isolated incident. TDS has long been known to edit their interviews to misconstrue their interviewees. However, this is a particularly well documented case. Because I've never seen your argument as to how I'm a hypocrite. You just took it out and called me one. I'm not gonna bother responding to that. By talking about Fox News? How about you address my issues, for a change? I have an unanswered post from our exchange a page or two back. Or, at least, answer durvasa's concern. Whatever.
My take on the editing by TDS is that it is satire, and the editing and taking things out of context (very obviously and absurdly) is the entire point of the satire.
