Here is what Phil Jackson did as the head coach with the Bulls, 1st season, conference final, lost to the Pistons by 3-4; 2nd season, conference final, lost to the Pistons by 3-4; 3rd season, title, beat the Pistons 4-0, Blazers 4-2; What's you definition by "win", again?
That means nothing! You can coach a good team with a good winning %, but still a bad coach. The better measurement is the actual wins/loses vs expectations, say the "common" expectation for the Rockets this season is 52-30, but we won 50. Yes, he would have a good winning %, but in reality, he would be failed as a coach for this team.
Originally posted by DaDakota JVG will not win here in Houston, the next guy might, but JVG...never. Originally posted by ChenZhen Look at JVG's winning percentage as a coach in his lifetime. He's been a winner and has been to the playoffs pretty much every single year he's coached with even a winning percentage in the playoffs. He took us to the playoffs for the first time in years his first season with us. And just after 1 year here and a few games into the 2nd season with T-Mac and Yao entering their primes playing only a few games together, DaDa is saying JVG will not win here. How unreasonable is that statement?
Hi guys, The interview happened. But I just called the station and they won't be releasing the audio until tonight maybe after the game. That never happens and I am sorry about that. I can give you the gist. On Yao: He is really happy with the progress on his conditioning. They asked him why he is so passive and Gundy didn't have an answer. But he said that he is ultra competitive and that will help him in the league. In addition, he said that when Yao has T-Mac, he is just "whatever". When T-Mac is out, Yao is very dominant. On T-Mac Says that he is surprised at how smart he is and that he is VERY unselfish. He said its too early to tell who had the better trade. But that he is very happy with him. On the team The lapses are annoying him to death and that he thinks its because we have to work on the losing mentality that the team seems to still carry. He says the only three players that have winning careers on the team. Boki is one. I don't remember the other two. He said the mentality is changing but that when it happens, there will be no going back for the team. He says he is very happy with the collection of talent on the team. He also says that Ward was signed for minimum money to be a back up and that the other day he played 41 minutes. They can't wait for Sura to come back. He does really like the team. They also mentioned to him that Jackson in the studio interview last month spoke well about Gundy. Gundy was like WTF??? They don't like each other and it seems to stem from the fact that Gundy tried to break up the Mourning/Johnson fight back in 1997. Jackson said he would never stoop to that level (I do remember that interview and he did say that) and that Gundy should of stayed out. Thats pretty much what I remember and could listen to at work. He did scout the Knicks and loved their backcourt and bench. I promise the minute it comes out, I will post the audio. My apologies again.
Well, we know DD gets emotional from time to time. In fact, someone digged out one of his old post, where he actually sang the praise for JVG. I don't like JVG and his style from his Knicks' days (me being a Bulls fan then), but I never doubted his ability of winning games here. I'll root for him until the day he is no longer the coach of the Rockets. Is he good enough to coach this team to its full potential? That's an entirely different issue. His tenure with the Knicks doesn't means much here since he pretty much inherited the whole thing from Riely. Yes, he did took that team to the final, but that was after MJ's retirement, and Hue Hollins gave that to him. His time with the Rockets so far doesn't help his case much either. Yes, the Rockets made the playoff last year, but we all know that we'd have been in the playoff the year before if Rudy didn't check into the hospital. A 3(?) games regular season improvement really doesn't mean much considering the year before was Yao's rookie season. As of this year, it's too early to tell. But, if the team doesn't show considerable improvement by the mid-season, and by the end of the season, then he should be held responsible for that result. After all, he practically assembled the entire rosters this year.
So is that why Phil Jackson hates Van Gundy? Because of that? Did Phil have anything to do with that fight?
