I like the third one, gives lie to the myth of Barry Sanders (let's just get this thread going).

Nah...you missed the Barry Sanders and his crappy OL need not apply corollary.

If NFL goes to 18 games, might as as well start platooning running backs.

"Establishing the run" would still get coached for identity purposes of "hitting them in the mouth". Though agree, effective running still matters more than one-dimensional worship of the run. Still need to run to keep explosive Tom Brady/Peyton Manning offenses off the field.

I like the one about Shotgun formation. Honestly, I've never understood why more teams don't use it. Yes, it does add a small degree of whoops-factor with a bad snap, but the extra time it gives the QB, not having to drop back, seems invaluable.

There's a lot of different ways to be a successful football team, I'd be highly wary of using anyone's "basic tenants" as a formative plan; interesting reading though.

I wonder how much of the increased efficiency of the shotgun comes from the fact that the Colts and Saints run it so much.

good point. Also, a team usually wont run the shotgun if they don't have a QB who can make good decisions quickly.

I don't really understand the first one. He's basically saying that "establishing the run" is successful only if you do it successfully. Well, DUH!

I think when most people talk about "establishing the run" it's kind of assumed that it means doing it successfully. They're not talking about running 20 times for 22 yards. Of COURSE that's not going to win you any games. I think the only person who doesn't understand this is......Gary Kubiak......

On the flipside, how much of the Colts and Saints success is because they run a more efficient offensive system? :)

    Some other fun ones..

    The David Carr argument:

Rushing is more dependent on the offensive line than people realize, but pass protection is more dependent on the quarterback himself than people realize.

If only Colt McCoy had been a 2nd round draft pick:

The future NFL success of quarterbacks chosen in the first two rounds of the draft can be projected with a high degree of accuracy by using just two statistics from college: games started and completion percentage.

    Good sign for the Texans:

The red zone is the most important place on the field to play well, but performance in the red zone from year to year is much less consistent than overall performance.
