so the nfl was all about only putting your actual last name on the jersey. now it is his last name and they're all about not putting it on his jersey. interesting.

and assuming there's no particular reason they would have 100,000 unsold jerseys right now versus any other time (maybe a little more than normal since the season just started), then does that mean any star that wants to legally change their name can basically only do so once the inventory is out? especially since the inventory isn't going to go very fast once it's not their name. doesn't that seem kind of ridiculous?

like JV pointed out, they'll sell more ocho cinco jerseys than johnson jerseys so why not just start making the new ones (technically it has to be # ocho cinco jerseys sold x marginal profit of reebok jersey > johnson jerseys sold x $48, but even that would most likely be true at this point). basically they seem to be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

$30 to the tip jar says CJ85 wins this battle if it goes to court or an arbitrator. There's no legitimate reason for this not to be his on-field jersey.

Reebok doesn't have to make Ocho products, they can keep the Johnson ones on the shelves all season. If the argument is, no one would buy them because they aren't "correct"....well, they aren't now anyway.

Dumb as it is, it's his legal last name. Suck it up, NFL.

So, how about the players that get traded in the middle of the season, like Chris Chambers, he left a lot of jerseys.

I think its a bad move for the NFL, and its really turning into the "No Fun League" like previously has being named.

Brett Favre was traded one month before the season begin, and Im sure they had a lot of Green Bay Packers jersey, with his name.

Madden '09 have Favre with the the packers on the cover, so Favre would have to eat up the costs, of the production of the covers of the game, if you keep the same way.

I'm going to ask my law school dean about any legal basis for this on Monday. He's basically a sports law genius (wrote the sports law textbook that most law schools use and he's on the board of directors for the sport lawyer's association), so I'm sure he'll have something to say about it.

The NFL is just a bunch of haters. Ocho Cinco is a winner and he will always win.

    exactly right.

i'd bet reebok has nothing to do with this. they have to eat unsold jerseys all the time. players change numbers, teams, etc. this is about goodell coming up with every reason under the sun to stop chad from wearing that nickname on his jersey. it's more personal than anything else. he needs to take the stick out of his a$$.

the money they would make from the new jersey sales, plus tv ratings would greatly overshadow any number they were hoping to get from the name johnson.

and as you said, there's nothing they can do to stop it. it's his legal name. what do they want him to wear, a fake name on his back?

I'm surprised that so many are seeing this in favor of Chad, like myself. I thought there would be more backlash toward him. I see many of you despising the NFL's rules, policies, and procedures more than anything else, also like myself. :)

Chad is a moron. However, if the guy is dumb enough to change his name to get ocho cinco on the back of his jersey, that's his right.

The NFL is trying to regulate the moron, which is understandable, but they are going about it the wrong way. They should just take this as a battle lost and work on winning the war.
