As far as I know, you're never allowed to play with a cast. He would have to tough it out. The cast would be dangerous to players around him.

I've seen players do it, at least on their forearm/hand. There could be regulations on the types of casts that are allowed.

German player Thomas Berthold wore one in 1986. I believe it was the quarterfinal against Mexico when he got a red card for knocking out a Mexican player with it.

FIFA law number 4 covers it and you're right, the vagueness of the law seems to allow a cast at the referee's discretion (pre-game). I'd imagine the referee would only allow foam/rubber casts versus hard casts (such as fiberglass).

The law seems to be directed at jewelerry and doesn't actually mention casts. Will be interesting.

As you can tell, I've been injured quite a bit in my life lol.

Also from the England squad, Gareth Barry (for the U.S. game) and Rio Ferdinand (for the whole tournament).

 Yes, I'm scared. They beat JAMAICA, THAILAND, and NAMIBIA!!! :( I'm scared. Scared schmared. Who cares if Mexico beat Brazil or Gambia? This is an entire different atmosphere, field, level of play, weather, etc. What, they scored 1 goal on Denmark?!?!? Oh, NOES!

;) I know what you meant. I am predicting a 3-2 win for México.

From the "Toughest Job: Opening Game Ref" article: In the three 32-team World Cups -- 1998, 2002 and 2006 -- 36 teams have lost their opening game; 33 of those teams failed to make it to the second round.

Yeah ... significant loss for Nigeria.

And then there's the comical case of Kim Myong-Won.

That's because from '70 to 2002, the previous champion has opened the first game. France lost to Senegal in 2002... playa'...!! Maybe we can tie them like Switzerland did in 1994? ;)

I didn't know that France hosted it in 2002.

He didn't say the very first game, he said the host country's first game.

I remember an offensive lineman back in high school football that had a cast on his arm for a majority of the season. Going against him in practice sucked because he would just hit you with it, it hurt like hell
