True. Mind you that this is a control 'outside' of the match and has little relation to how the game is officiated.
Agree. Replay reviews are terrible and truely put the game in the officials hands, let it stay with the players.
I don't agree. It is broken. It's just that people have to put up with it. Maybe a superior team can always overcome it but when 2 teams are equal, why do you want to leave it to chance or errs? Remember Henry's handball and the Irish?
I support all African teams plus Germany, Spain, and Argentina, what is wrong with that? I was also pointing out the obvious that Germany would have an easier time playing USA as the winner of that match would be playing Parguay (most likely). I don't want the teams I support to leave the tournament by playing against each other early on, how is that baiting?
If the IRISH let the game come to this, then it's the IRISH's fault for not making the best of their chances. Clearly, the teams were equal at that point except for ONE handball and we all know France was criminal. Clearly, the USA was a lot better on the pitch than ALGERIA today and they deserved to win because they kept at it without letting ONE CALL leave them out of the next round. I think you're helping the point to NOT have any technological advances to stop the game... like "sensors on the ball", "lasers to check if a ball went in", "slow mo cameras", etc., let HUMANS play, and let HUMANS be officials.
The can approach the tennis way where each team are allowed a couple of challenges once the ball goes out. The fourth official uses a monitor to check and if a team is right, then give whatever is necessary. If it's wrong, I don't know lose a substitution or something? Or they can use similar tactics as in Rugby. I don't know too much about it but I've seen it work before. The computer does all the work of the controversial decisions.
nice layout of the bracket. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/bracket so who are we rooting for the next 2 games?
The USA was 1 minute away from going home. If we had not scored that goal, there would have been a huge debate about the earlier goal against Slovenia. I don't advocate the new technology simply because I don't think there is an easy way to implement them without stopping the flow of the game. I still think adding 2 referees looks pretty good. If they don't see anything incredulous then the game would continue just like always.
The trouble is it might take a long time before the ball goes out and many other things could have happened in between the infraction and you intervening. Things can even happen in a few seconds. ie. you don't call an offside, you let the attacker shoots and scores then a couple of seconds later you call it off because someone on the touchline tells you to? It looks bad.
more like 3, but still, it was close. i was very happy to see 4 minutes of stoppage time added to the end of the game. i just find it hilarious that eng and slov finished their game, were looking at each other like we're advancing and if all goes well in 3 min, and then BAM, we score haha! whata day!
Yeah tell that to the UK fans who saw Maradona hand ball in the winner or the Irish fans who got screwed. You are being 100% disengious when you say team's overcome bad calls, because sometimes they do not. Slovenia did not deserve to go through they lost to the USA....glad they got their just due. DD
Because they missed MANY shots. Granted, they were the better team on the field, but please don't avoid the fact: missed chances = go home. I don't agree. I think it's STILL a huge debate. THIS is what I agree with wholeheartedly. No. DON'T STOP the game. I really really HATE the fact that no one sees that the sport is to be played by winning with SKILL and TECHNIQUE and TEAM PLAY, not "holding the ball" or "running out of bounds on purpose", or "calling a time out so that referees review a play" which is what gets exploited in other sports with "instant review." Referees hand out yellow cards when goalies take a long time to restart play... PLAY ON. Try to score. Make the other team commit a mistake... but don't keep others from playing. Advertisers LOVE this idea of "stop to review this" crap. We won't let FOOTBALL die with your commercials and timeouts. If a kid in Ethiopia or a girl in Argentina playing soccer can play the game without instant replay, so can Maradona, Messi, or Donovan. DaDarkOne, did you mean to say that I would want to add Instant Replay had it happened to MEXICO? No way, sir.
I am arguing the naivete of thinking everything could be fixed and to alter the way to officiate the biggest sport event. I was in the same frustrations before too but cest la vie, I cursed then move on.
If they miss a hundred shots, don't count any of them. The problem is the one they made which did not count. There is no need for a review. The extra referres are there to simply call what is there. If the one current CR can see everything , then there would not be any need but he misses things. Right. Lol
It's been over 2 hours since the game ended, and I'm STILL tingling from that match. Screaming and yelling probably wouldn't even do justice to how ecstatic I was when I saw that ball roll into the net. The only way to describe the first 90 minutes of that game was that it was like being in a pressure cooker. From all the opportunities we shanked away, to the goal that was taken away by the errant off-sides call, to the fact that England had scored their goal early, which added even more pressure on the Americans, everything led up to the dramatic finish. It really couldn't have been scripted any better than this.....needless to say, I'm going to be watching the rest of the matches today with bated breath. Saturday can't come soon enough. USA! USA! USA!
Ideally we would want Australia and Ghana winning. This would match us up with Australia. Realistically we should probably root for a Serbia win and a Ghana tie. This would match us up with Ghana.
