That referee looks kind of like one of my favorite movie characters.

Anyone see if he blew a glowing smoke ring during today's match?

You've completely misunderstood the point. These resources and opportunities available to the American youth, especially in the suburbs, are why they shouldn't be b****ing and moaning about some referee calls in a game against Slovenia. Let's be honest, the Americans are not an instinctual people like the South Americans. They need to be programmed like robots to understand and excel at something, which is why a free flowing game like soccer that requires vision and skill in ADDITION to the athleticism doesn't come naturally to them.

And it's because of these reasons it's completely irrelevant to say "if the MLS was as popular as the NFL" because the natural skillset just isn't there for Americans to dominate in soccer. Whereas being big, aggressive and eating tons of food comes naturally to them, ala, dominating in soccer. They're also very good at war strategy, which they can incorporate into stop-start stop-start games like football.

Basketball, Football and Baseball are all games Americans invented for themselves and have just recently expanded to a global scale, so that point is moot.

Basketball has the same movement and concept as soccer, both require give and goes, picks and rolls and movement off the ball.....

Your post is silly.....the reason soccer has not taken off in the USA is simple....TELEVISION....

Kids grow up watching the other sports and move that way....

Nice post. This translates to other sports as well, how many times have we seen guys who were described as "winners" at the high school and college level but unable to do anything with themselves in the pro's? Especially in football and basketball, where saving a high school coaches job is more important than the end result for any player who isn't a prodigy like LeBron. They're forced to compromise their development for the sake of the team even if it is for an unpaid, amateur league. This just isn't how the rest of the world works, but they'll never have to change their ways because the big 3 sports are self sustaining.

If this is what these guys really want to do with their lives, I would look at the way the game is played in the PRO'S from a young age and try to acclimate my style to that. Who cares about the amateur level except a bunch of frat kids and alumni who won't do **** for your career besides boost your self esteem at games?

That's how you become a true baller. Like Mitch Richmond, Jerome Kersey, Scottie Pippen.

Sidenote: In terms of having plenty of talent, I think you could say that about every populated nation. I'm sure the villages of India and Pakistan have plenty of underdeveloped, impoverished "talent" who won't have a millionth of the opportunities Americans have. But the vision, the creativity, that comes from within and can't be developed. And robots need to be programmed, they can't program themselves.

No, it really doesn't. You can't teach a fish to fly.

    Are you serious?

That's because, to fly you must have wings, and fish don't have it. Are you saying that to play soccer, you need legs? :( Yeah, USA peeps don't have them.

BAD ANALOGY is BAD. Even I don't make that argument.

I think it was pretty obvious that I was talking about money, resources, time and opportunities relating to the "farm system". *golf clap* for the link.

US needs bigger soccer stars for kids to idolize in order to stay with that sport and pursue pro careers.

No because it happens in leagues and international play often enough that you deal w/ it and move onto the next game. Sometimes the refs make sh!te calls and sometimes they don't. You whine for a minute and move on to the next game and aim to destroy the next team.

I hope the US do so.

The Slovenians are trash. The second that goal was disallowed they should have scored an own goal to show solidarity against piss poor officiating. Since they did not, they should be ignored from here on out. It is the only fair thing to do.

In all serious, USA was robbed. They came out and showed they were the true comeback kings.

Umm...Basketball requires vision and skill AND athleticism. Only difference is that basketball players dribble the ball with their hands and shoot it into a small circular goal. Your telling me Derrick Rose doesn't have Vision,Skill, and Athleticism? Or Rondo, Kobe, Lebron, Melo, Durant, CP3 etc etc.

What natural skillset? Do you honestly believe that Brazilians...as a NATIONALITY are just born with a innate ability to play football? Or maybe they are just born with two legs and feet? So like just being born in Brazil...I get like this experience XP bonus towards "Football skills"

Actually all pro level athletes are programmed like robots, to have that muscle memory to react without much thought. That's why Kevin Martin has that ugly @$$ shot, because it works and he has done it a million times now. That's why Bball players growing up usually are always dribbling a ball. That's why you practice the same plays, sets, over and over again.

You are right that you can't teach a Bball player to be a good soccer player...obviously! That is not the point...unless you believe at birth you are destined to only be good at one sport or something.

I don't believe that guys are born with the innate ability to do those things. Those guys, like Jordan...worked damn hard to be that great. They just didn't get this sudden surge of talent from nowhere. Usually with ANYTHING whether it be a great musician, writer, artist, actor, those people start at a EARLY age.
