He'll never become the player we all want him to be if he keeps having to go back to China and play basketball during the offseason. Year round ball is hell in a body, let a lone a huge one like his.

This sucks..........I hoping that with the National commitments out of the way that Yao would finally be able to rest and work with the Rocks personal trainers this off season. He can't continue to play for China ever freakin' offseason and ever increase his production. Imo this is the biggest reason we haven't seen the growth in his game. If he is going to continue to play for every tournament China can come up with in the offseason then maybe we should cut him loose...............of course that will never happen because of the marketing money involved, but man I am getting sick of this crap. I finally think he is going to have an offseason to stay here and work on his game and then the vultures suck him back in.

If that is the only way for Yao to get out of this, then by all means, he should develop an "injury" that keeps him from participating. As others have said, you cannot play year round, when you play at the highest level in the very long NBA season, and expect to keep from breaking down. Race horses get better treatment than that. You need a break from competition. Working out during the offseason is quite different than being involved in the sort of team play Yao apparently has been hog-tied into doing yet again. With a body like Yao's, it is even more important to have some time off. Informal pickup games, and workouts with someone like Falsone, is more along the lines of what he should be doing. If this runs into the training camp and preseason, then it is unacceptable.

Olympic competition is an entirely different animal. That's to be expected, and Yao should be honored to do it.

Heaven forbid that he should go to a "big man" camp during the summer... how could he fit it into his schedule??

    (insert "roll-eyes" here)

There is no official disclosure in the article on Yao's participation. Key quotes from sources are either anonymous or indirect. Also, no evidence that says Yao had a deal with Shanghai authorities. There is no reporter's name, and it's an article that's from the Sina Sports, not an article Sina.com took from other more credible news agency. I'm not gonna dismiss it outright but it serves nothing more than raising an eyebrow to me until new things turn up.

In fact, the news originally comes from a reporter named Yi Xiao He(Reporter of Sports Weekly). And I also heard local TV commentators(Shandong Sports TV) saying so in today's game.Seems that it is not a rumor.

Just trade him before it happens...then we'll be fine.

The good news is that Shanghai team must win the qualification tournament to enter the finals.
Yao seems only play in the finals.
So let's curse Shanghai team to be defeated. ;)

Yao will never become the complete player he could be diluting his talent with sub-par athletic tournaments: he NEEDS to be at Westside playing the best. I'm beginning to realize that, as others have said, we have a high-profile role player: nothing more. Yao is good and that's likely all he will be at this rate. NOBODY IN THE LEAGUE is afraid of Yao and that's a shame.

Well, Yao is still maturing. Gundy said Yao sometimes is too willingly listening to other people.
One reason he cannot get rid of all those bad habits is that everytime he went back to China, he picked them up because there was nobody screaming at mistakes he made in those low level games scoring 30, 40 points. Of course, it's Yao's fault too. He needs to know himself. But because of his personality, Yao needs to be whipped at westside in the summer until he unlearn all those bad habits.

Blah blah blah. Yao at least had a super-accurate jump shot before Van Gundy got hold of him. Now I haven't seen him drain one from the top of the key in ages.

But anyways, the article says Yao probably won't be participating in the preliminary rounds of the tourney (held in June), because Shanghai is too dominant. They're hoping that Yao will play in the finals in Nanjing in October, but we'll see. I think if Yao has no other obligations, he'll be expected to play, but I wouldn't be surprised if Yao's contract allowed Rockets commitments to over-rule his Shanghai commitments. If that's the case, it just means he'll get a 2 week head-start to training camp compared to other players.

The article also says Shanghai'll be facing a lot of tough competition, and the odds of winning aren't great even with Yao. Who knows, if y'all starting cheering for Shanghai's prelim round opponents, they wont' even make the finals.

Oh, and did someone really say most people in China don't care about the National Games? Based on what type of personal experience, I'd like to know?

It's certainly not the Olympics, but the National Games are a big deal nonetheless. But in this case, I agree with a previous poster... since Yao's participation will "only" benefit Shanghai, there will be a lot of national pressure to let him return early for his NBA commitments.

I don't bother if Yao only plays for CNT in Olympics and world tournaments, but Playing for Shanghai in the meaningless National games just piss me off.

Sometimes I think Yao is too nice, which is the reason I like him however, or trying to be nice too much.

I think it's true that most people don't care about the National Games. It's just some shows for officials(to get "achievements" and outlays),professional athletes(to be qualified for Asian and Olympic Games) and some reporters who have nothing else to report.

I recalled that none around myself talked about the National Games in recent ten years.I remember friends talked much about soccer games in various leagues,NBA,Asian and Olympic Games, table tennis games, tennis games, etc. But I just can't remember someone ever talked the National Games.

As long as these arrogant, short-sighted and stupid officials are in control of matters, the Chinese National basketball and soccer teams will stay in the "medicore" level and can never compete with top teams in the world.

The Chinese National Soccer team has been a laughing stock. The time will come for their basketball team soon, if they abuse Yao too much and cause him a permanent injury before the 2008 Olypmics.

Being a Chinese, I am sad to see these developments. These officials don't have a clue in how to develop potential players - all they know is pad up their "personal figures" by fully abusing Yao during their tenure of office.

    Shame on them.
