haven't checked through much of the list, but i think coopers in llano edges out the lockhart/luling collection of kruezs/smittys/city market/blacks. in fact, we may stop for some Q on our way into austin later this afternoon.
tinman, Kreuz's and Smitty's are practically the same thing. They are the from the same family. After the owner died, one of his kids got to keep the name (Kreuz's) and the other got to keep the location with the original pits (Smitty's). They are both great - just depends on the day I guess.
This thread makes me happy monday is memorial day. To heck with the heat and chance o' rain - it's time to smoke brisket.
Well, work wise. I'll be stopping by there today to place my to go order and sitting under the trees waiting for the meats after work. Their brisket/ribs/sausage...these are things I think about when having sex sometimes. Whoever mentioned Woody's in Centerville, meh. Ok BBQ, but their beef jerky is some of the best stuff I've ever had. I usually spend around $100.00 every 2-3 months or so online ordering the stuff.
That is a crap list! First, you absolutely cannot limit the list of "top" Texas bbq restaurants to 50. That's like listing the 50 hottest women in the world. #50 is going to be just as hot as #1. Second, there's no way that Mt. Zion in Huntsville is in the top 50. It's a great eclectic place to eat, but by no means is their bbq great. Blessed maybe, but not great. Last, where is Joe's BBQ (Alvin)? Everyone has mentioned their missing favorite...Joe's is my (and Nolan Ryan's) missing favorite.
I gotta say, I also think Joes' in Alvin is not all that great. Good, not great. Not top 50. Best I ever had is in my own backyard. (I'm from Texas, I don't have to be modest.) My ribs are the best pork ribs you will EVER taste. (And there are members on this board who can vouch for me!)
It was similar but I remember Kreuz's had more flavor. I also enjoy Louie Meuller's in Taylor. they have the best beef ribs evar! there's that James Beard award thing he got too.
I eat there about once a week. It's fantastic and the people there are freakin' awesome. Go during lunch and you get a free dessert (Friday = homemade icecream). I'm heading to Lexington for the #1 when my buddy gets here from Germany in a few weeks. I've had the others in the "top 5" and they're all fantastic. The reason the Salt Lick is only an "honorable mention" is two-fold. First, their quality has definitely diminished since the late 90's when they were continually in the top 5 on this list. Second, other places are steppin' up to the plate, so to speak. (Incidentally, I was married at the Salt Lick.) Carry on.
I noticed there was nothing from Elgin on there. I've been to Southside Market and Meyer's (which I liked better). Supposedly there's a couple other places there also.
Are the Lockhart locations open on Sunday? Same for Luling. I'm headed to Austin sometime this month for a wedding thing so I might hit them up.
