wesnesked is a man who knows his Tex Mex. Sir, I bow in your general direction. I eat at the one on Airline for lunch during the workweek, and I hit the one near me at West Bellfort and Fondren for dinnertime. Teotihuacan, for my money, is the best Tex Mex in Houston. Best table top salsas (the green salsa is to die for) and a huge menu. The one near me runs 99 cent margs until 7PM on Fridays. Ninfas on Navigation runs second to Teotihuacan, although I like it during Astros season because you can eat dinner there, leave your car, and they will shuttle you to Minute Maid Park and pick you up after the game.
Wow! No mention of Lopez Mexican Restaurant on S. Wilcrest in SW Houston? That place has been around forever. Family owned, great service, great food, great atmosphere!!! I'm almost 29 yrs. old and I've been going there since I was 5 or so when it was just a little hole-in-the-wall place in a little strip center. A few years ago, they upgraded by building their own place right next door. A MUST eat for any Tex-Mex lover!!! http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv0895.asp
Haha Well, where would you rank Pancho's? Among.. Taco Bell, Taco Cabana and other such cheap alternatives? Or are they all equally poor?
That's exactly what I'm looking for. Aswell as good flautas, and good, not bland, refried beans and rice etc. But, I'm also interested in good salsa and chips and varied takes on Tex-Mex and a unique menu.. So, so far, the majority seems to be pointing to: El Tiempo, Pappasitos and Ninfas? Honorable mention to Spanish Village and Lupe Tortillas. And I agree with other posters, fajitas isn't necessarily what I'm looking for when I go to a Tex-Mex restaurant. Either way, keep the suggestions comming if ya have 'em. Loads of options so far.
Alright man, you know I like you....but I have to strongly disagree with you here. I've been to Los Cucos twice, at seperate locations....and I thought it was terrible both times. The food was below average and the ritas were just awful IMO. El Tiempo has the shrimp stuffed avacados....go give it a shot and thank me later.
i could be wrong, but i think i remember there being one on burnett? ive only been to the oltorf one. they are more interior style (definately not tex-mex). i get shrimp enchiladas alot. or chicken w/ mole sauce. they also have some suprisingly good avacado margaritas. i know people who have worked there over the years and ive heard the owners/mngmnt are kind of a-holes - perhaps your g.f. has some beef w/ them or knows someone who has? for example, they take 7 bucks a week out of the waitstaffs paychecks for "juice and chips". they just assume that the average employee eats and drinks that much every week - my friend was especially bitter over it b/c she didnt like their juice.
no she doesn't know anyone there but she is friends with carlos who runs el chile and all those restaurants on manor. I guess I will just drag her there and buy drinks so she won't whine.
I frequent Los Rameriz in Clear Lake and I used to go to Bravo's a bunch in Sagemont when I had some friends over there. That place is cool. In Houston La Tapatia in Montrose was my favorite but I haven't been there in years.
I'm very surprised there hasn't been a mention of Pico's on Bellaire. They're more known for their Mex Mex, but their Tex Mex is great as well. The best in Houston as far as I'm concerend. http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv0980.asp
I love Pico's but I never get there anymore. BTW... today is Elvis' birthday and Chuy's is running specials.
I love Cuquita's over here in Dallas...Other than that, just Pappasitos...The last Ninfa's in Dallas just closed...
I second this. My friends and I go atleast once a week. Think Pappasitos tenderness + more flavor. I-45 N ext N Main. They've gotten many awards, and even have their own Spanish Flowers Mexican Restaurant Day, given by the city. The service is always great, and they constantly make rounds bringing u fresh tortillas.
