Just noticed Pei Wei has pho. May have to run by there since there's one pretty close to where I work.
I like Pei Wei better than PF Chang's. I recommend the Dan Dan noodle bowl & the Pho. Neither are what you'd consider "traditional" Chinese dishes (hell, the Pho isn't even Chinese!), but they're both just fine. Not REALLY my style. I mean, I'll take a regular iced tea over some chai whatchamafracit tea any day. And I don't need orange slices for my drink, thank you very much. BUT, if someone drags me there, I know there's a couple of good things I can order. And it's a helluva lot better than PF Chang's. For a fraction of the price. AND they still have the brown rice. Which is nice.
if you like expensive, non-authentic chinese food, then feel free to eat at pei wei and pf chang's. i for one have been to each once and vow to never go back nor take my parents to those. yes i am chinese. if you live in houston, go to chinatown for real chinese food. it will be better than pei wei and pf chang's and no tip. chinese cafe, hunan restaurant, etc all on bellaire are excellent. and yes-freebirds, petco, HEB and all that is at the Hancock Center off 41st in Austin.
A place in Chinatown I discovered not too long ago is called Chinese Cuisine. It is in the shopping center on Bellaire just before Sinh Sinh. Awesome food!
My dance partner is Chinese, and she says Chinese Cafe at 610 and Richmond is good, or Caton Seafood at Richmond and Kirby. She goes for fast and inexpensive. My other (older) dance partner is Taiwanese, and she prefers Sihn Sihn at Bellaire just inside Beltway 8. You can order the off-the-menu Chinese menu and get mayonaise shrimp, fresh and steamed vegetables, mussels, black pepper crab and so on, very good, pretty cheap, at 4 am. It's nice to have a decent place open that late for after the dance.
Eh, it's ALRIGHT. They also have a C&S Cafe off of 290, same general concept. I like the Hunan Restaurant in Chinatown (Bellaire), but I also like Lai Lai's. Especially when you're with a big group, and opt to go "family style."
