The original Prince's drive-in was awesome! You could get fried shrimp and a chocolate shake! Does anybody remember a place called the Western Traveler? It was my favorite restaurant as a child. There was a huge water wheel with phosphorescent stars on the ceiling. I was obviously into atmosphere more than food back then...
Many a 4am acid trip was spent trying to work through a plate fajita nachos....wow...I saw Robert Reid in there in the early 90's. We both agreed that the Celtics sucked. Good times...
It's messed up... Houston has no Bennigan's anymore, but New Delhi, Qatar, Jordan, El Salvador, and Korea do. wth??
This really takes me back. I used to listen to Buchsbaum religiously. After he died, and I learned that he was basically a football obsessed shut-in who lived with his parents, it all made sense to me.
Yeah, there are still Black Eyed Peas everywhere. Haven't been to one in a while though. Love their fried okra. Loved all their veggies, actually. And those rolls and cornbread..... What ever became of the Hard Rock Cafe on Kirby. I know there's one downtown, but I remember when the one on Kirby first opened, it was the talk of the town. We used to go there after Rocket games and there would always be at least one player coming in and signing autographs.
How about Steffs BBQ, I think that's what they called it. It was in Channelview I think. It seems to me that they had a seafood decor which was always strange to me. Does anybody remember this place? It was probably late seventies early eighties, I heard they were bought out some time ago.
Well, hell. I was all excited about being able to go to Corn Dog 7 today, only to find out that the one in The Woodlands closed 3 years ago... Damnit.
Pig Stand went bankrupt. However, there is one in San Antonio that was taken over by someone and they operate as such.
I think the Tel-Wink Grill on Telephone Rd. might actually still be there. If not, it was a favorite place to stop late at night for some food, which my friends and I did pretty often. During the day and the evening, it was a family spot, but come midnight and beyond, prostitutes hung around the bar, chatting up the cops and anyone else who was interested. Just a classic Southeast Houston spot... good, but a little gritty around the edges.
I washed dishes there for a few months while going to school. Got "loaded" with the manager and still have one of their ceramic cups (he gave me a case of them when I told him I was quitting). A good place!
This thread reminded me of the old Mandola's Deli that I used to go to as a kid. It was inside of a shopping center next to a Rice grocery store. I think it was on Bellfort or Broadway. Anyways, I did a Google search and to my surprise I found that there is a Mandola's Deli open now off of Leland. I went there for lunch today and it was just like I remembered as a kid. Highly recommended for anyone that is into some good family italian poboys. I had the muffaletta today and it was outstanding! http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv0116.asp
I think there is one still in Pasadena, on Southmore ave. Used to love their green sauce in high school.
