I never ate there, but always heard them mentioned on KTRH's SportsBeat I think. Back when John Breen and Jerry Trupiano were hosting it with a cranky Joel Buchsbaum calling in to talk about that 8th string running back on some 6 man team in Alaska a scout from East Padooka state sent him film about. Those were the days...

I remember winning a contest to represent my school/school district and visit Austin and see the State Legislature in action. We went there... one of the aids snuck us around hotels, going down fire escapes we shouldn't have been on, setting off alarms, etc. and we ended up going there. Strange place. There's one here in Dallas.

Valian's. The first pizza I ever ate was from that place.

    Pipe Organ Pizza
    turned into
    Scooby Doo's Pipe Organ Pizza
    turned into
    Showbiz Pizza
    turned into
    Chuck E. Cheese Pizza

We used to eat at a place called Sir Pizza. I always enjoyed it. They had square pans of pizza that were pretty tasty.

I also got to eat a trough of ice cream at Farrell's

We ate the delicious onion rings at Hamburgers by Gourmet

And we went to Monterrey House frequently enough that I have the image of the waitress etched in my brain.

When we visit California each summer, we hit Del Taco a few times.

    There's still a Birra Poretti's downtown.

There's still at least one Double Dave's Pizza on Ella just north of 610

And there are still a few Charlie's Hamburgers around

They had a fire the day or two after Ike hit. I remember driving back to midtown and seeing it up in flames.

    Nice thread, brings me back.

I'd like to try Monterrey House again - has that morphed into something else?

The Woolworth's and Foley's (I think) at NW Mall both had little diner areas iirc...my mother would reward me for tagging along. And Farrell's of course.

Any of you eat at Sizzler?

There's one left in Texas apparently - in Rosenberg.

Two pesos was awesome, I'd rather have their fajitas than most mexican restaurants I've been. Taco Cabana was a step far below two pesos.

Ate many a meal there at the one off of I-10.

Been gone from Houston since 1975 but have a curiosity about a few old places:

San Jacinto Inn-- still open? Used to be an occasional family outing with an out of town guest

Magic Mushroom -- my HS girlfriend used to love that place; wasn't I a good boyfriend?!

House of Pies -- are they still around?

Mason Jar -- steakhouse off of I-10; my brother used to wait on tables there; always had that mysterious message awaiting decoding painted on the fence, IIRC

Barbacue Inn -- my dad used to take us there in the early 60s for fried catfish; made a nostalgic trip there a couple of years ago with my kids.

It's funny, I live in Arkansas and we still have Rally's, Bennigan's, Western Sizzlin, Pizza Inn, Mazzio's, and Ryan's within 30 minutes of my house.
