LampPost pizza --they may still be around but not anywhere I have seen them edit: saw their website they are still around mainly in california there is one in round rock tx though but locations have gone done. Pizza Man -- used to order from them a lot in high school they shut down recently, a smaller chain they may still have locations around open. --still a smaller franchise type locations are still around but harder to find. Funny my Boss is in detroit (non final four related business) and said that he is eating at a bobs big boy right now...I havent seen on of those around here in years I think they all may be gone.
We used to frequent the Albritton's Cafeteria over on Waugh Drive growing up. As long as you sat well away from the smoking section (and, man, those old folks could SMOKE), the food was pretty good. Their mashed potatoes and fried chicken were to-die-for. Also, Hamburgers by Gourmet, while greasy as could be, was delicious. Is the original Antone's Import Co. still open? I loved the imported foods you could get there. And the Super Original was epic. Dang, I want a po'boy now.
http://www.luckyspub.com/aspx/directions.aspx Basically, it is a few blocks over between MMP and the George R Brown on the other side of the freeway in the Warehouse district.
I googled it after I posted about it. Apparently they re-opened their Huntsville location in December. People waited in line for 30 minutes to get their food.
Anyone remember "Ron's?" I think it was "Ron's Crispy Fried Chicken." Most of the old locations turned into Church's or Popeyes. Then there was Quickie Burger... Earl Campbell's place. Great fries!
Bonanza Steak House (off I45 and Bellfort) Kip's Big Boy (over by Gulfgate) Prince's Hamburgers (by the old King Center Drive-In)
Del Taco (now a Whataburger) - Jones/290 - they had good burgers .....I remember my dad taking us there and then to Handy Dan to shop for lumber Spanky's Pizza (now a Fajita Willie's)- also Jones/290 - good pizza and video games Grandy's - was @ 1960/290 - loved getting bacon and watered down eggs there on Sunday morning - the parking lot it was in is now a huge indoor storage place - that indoor storage place use to be a Woolworth's - we would get GI Joe's there
holy crap!!! i have a great aunt who lives in Huntsville, still...and we pass through there going to visit my wife's grandparents. I will be stopping!!!!!
Two Pesos (F*** taco cabana) Neal's Ice Cream/Cookies Felix's, but only for the queso One's A Meal (great at 3 AM)
JoJo's was awesome. The House Sampler: Potato Skins, Fried Zucchini, Chicken Strips, and Onion Rings. Served with Honey Mustard, Ranch and Sour Cream! I seem to remember one in Austin, only it was called CoCo's.
so sad. huge family tradition for us. growing up, we'd go there nearly every sunday after church....to their location on Kirby. my parents went to dates growing up at the westheimer/montrose location. we knew waiters there that had worked there forever...in fact, one of them is now working at Cadillac, and he still calls me by name.
Ron's used to give a way a chicken dinner to ticket holders when the Rockets scored 135+ points. I think it was done 4 times and Dunleavy hit the magic shot in at least 3 of the games and thus became known as "chicken man".
others: Don the Beachcomber also...there was a place down Westheimer when I was a little kid....it had all red decor...and you placed your order at the table through some kind of machine, as i recall. i want to say it had the word "ruby" in the name, but I'm not sure that's right. anyone else recall that??? you'd have to be probably at least 35 to remember this.
I agree, talk about old school hang out spots. isn't there a grandy's still somewhere off 45 towards galveston
