That's actually pretty funny... In mainland China, you probably have to watch yourself in regards as to where to eat. In general, it's pretty safe to eat at reputable restaurants or buy groceries from credible sources. In places like Hong Kong and Taiwan, you really don't need to worry at all.
ok..what is real chinese food? the authentic places in the states...or the restaurants in China...I have been to both..and can tell you either definitions beats the hell out of anything that comes out of that imitation **** that is served at buffets and restaurants like PFchangs, peiwei, panda express, etc. That other **** you eat is NOT chinese food..if you think it is you are just plain ignorant (at least when it come to what chinese food is ) Oh and to the OP..beef noodle soup, green onion pie (cake), little dragon dumplings, egg cake at tan tan (not really chinese) ..Pulled cake, etc. The best restaurants i have been to across all genres of food were mostly located in China.. The dim sum in guangzhou and HK are out of this world..and i dont even like dim sum all that much here normally.. OH and taiwan has got some amazing food as well. and their sanitation is better.
Moo Goo Gai Pan is a dish that contains sliced chicken then sauteed with mushrooms and chinese vegetables in a white sauce.
there are so many different style of chinese food in china. i think there are 8 major ones, such as sichuan. they are all very different in terms of taste. people around coast areas eat sweeter food. while in my home town, spicy is the only way to go. american chinese are mostly imitations of coast area food, mostly from guangdong (canton). that's why there are so many sweet dishes. but still, they are imitations, and they don't taste as good as the real thing. real chinese food beats everything
This should be a slash pooping thread. Buffets tear me up, because I eat until I get sick. Mostly fried stuff, but it has been a while. I might focus on lo mein and the special rice and a little of each entree now. Maybe an egg roll.
You really think the toy they gave out in the McDonalds here are not made in China? Or you are just acting dumb?
My favorite American "Chinese" food is General Tsao's chicken. I know it's American, but that doesn't keep it from being delicious. That said, I RARELY eat at Chinese buffets, and if I do it's almost certainly because someone else suggested it. As far as "real" Chinese food is concerned, for me it's very hit and miss, but honestly I tend to like Americanized food more. Still, I haven't been to China itself, so I can only assume that Chinatown establishments are reasonably authentic. Having said that, the Chinese in India was delicious.
Best Chinese restaurant I've been to is China Inn Cafe in Katy at I-10 and Mason. My favorite dishes are sesame chicken, orange chicken, moo goo gai pan, and hunan combination (spicy vegetables with chicken, beef, and shrimp). Their lunch specials are 5-6 bucks and include soup (hot and sour all the way), iced tea, and an egg roll. Sooo freaking good. I agree with the poster who said that dine in restaurants are the only ones worth going to, I hatehatehate those greasy buffet places. Loaded with MSG.
My favorite dishes include Walnut Shrimp, and black pepper beef. As for dim sum dishes, there's a lot that I like (I didn't know all the english names, or even if they had any, so I looked all this up on wikipedia. I love wikipedia): Here's the main article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum#Dim_sum My personal Dim Sum favorites are: Shrimp Dumplings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Har_gau Shui Mai, a pork dumpling variation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaomai Char Siu Bau, a roast pork bun: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cha_siu_baau Rice noodle roll with shrimp: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_noodle_roll Chicken Feet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_feet Steamed meatballs (only good if you also get it with worcester sauce): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamed_meatball Spare Ribs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spare_ribs And my favorite dim sum dessert is definitely egg tarts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_tart
Dude I think it's located in his pants. I'm pretty sure he was referring to his junk. Either that or my head is just really in the gutter today.
Rhino's probably talking about tripe, cow tongues, animal brains, or whatever. Some of that stuff is okay, but there's a lot of different out there chinese dishes that are considered delicacy that don't do well with a western stomach. Even on a fish dish, you'll notice the Asian person as the one who eats the eye and brains. Looks disgusting, but tastes good. As for dim sum, little dragon dumplings are the best. If they cook it right, you eat it with an oversized spoon.
As long as you're generalizing.. let me refute. I can tell you that there are restaurants in China that are absolutely terrible. Ugh, had some of the grossest food ever there. (and in Taiwan too) All depends on where you go, what you get.. Hell, I even found a couple of things at PF Chang's that are pretty good! I will say that I hate the big buffet places. Mostly because of the horrendous quality of meat..that's what makes it taste bad to me more than the flavors or oilyness or anything else. I've had great Peking Duck here and in China. General Tso's is always a decent choice... the better the meat quality, the better it is to me. Generally, I'm a big fan of the sesame flavor...as well as a sweet & spicy combination. So whatever combines those is great..
I own a Chinese Buffet restaurant that is PACKED with 90% hispanic and I'm telling you .... those food on the buffet aren't "chinese foood" is more cooked to cater to the people here. I dont even eat at my own restaurant by knowing the way is cooked. If you want real chinese food go to Bellaire Fung's Kitchen, Tan Tan, Sinh Sinh, Fu Fu Cafe or any place in that area. But i'm not complaining if you guys like chinese buffets though
